i was looking to modify my FFBM, and was wondering what ramifications that would have on the busse lifetime warranty....

as of right now it's a standard FFBM.....

i wanted to get rid of the scallops on the spine, give it a full flat grind that goes down to a convex edge.....

the blade thickness would not change, but the blade profile would be drastically altered from a sabre to a full height grind......

I think at that point you would own the warranty, and you can rely on the properties of INFI, plus a little common sense, to protect the knife.

The shop would make the important (valid) call, but I would venture that any area, surface, edge modded would be excluded.

Would you warrant anything that you could not verify did not become subjected to a property altering action??

I think if you are doing your mods with hand tools you might be OK but if you use power tools it would probably void the warranty as you have the potential of screwing up the heat treat. Of course that would only be for breakage not you screwing up the knife trying to mod it (not that you would)

basically, busse has tested every design that goes out of there shop extensively, and knows what it will take to break it. thus, they feel secure in warrantying their work against any major unintentional damage (meaning inflicted during use).

when a knife is changed, and the design they made is altered, they have no longer tested that new design. they don't know how your new thinner flat ground fbm will react, especially under the conditions in which it was made. if you let it get really hot and put a really really thin edge on it - it may be the case that after extensive testing they wouldn't warranty such a blade. it's now your design, not theirs.

but even then you might get a new blade or one of equal value should it break. the idea behind the warranty as I understand it is that if your work causes the break in the knife then it's your responsibility to pay for or repair the damage. but if it's busse's work that breaks, then they will fix it.

for me, personally/morally, I assume that any blade that I modify, or have modified, outside of the busse shop is no longer warranty'd. that doesn't include sharpening or edge replofiling, but it does include changing the shape of the blade, or modifying the main grinds.

thanks for the answers fellas...perhaps i will just strip the coating, give it a satin finish and convex the edge.....i think that one of the most important/valuable traits of a busse is its warranty, and i wouldn't want to void it.....

thanks again....

I sent an email asking Amy-O the same thing. This was the response. "Modifications to the blade would void the warranty unless they are done by us here at the shop."

So unless you send it in to the shop you would void the warranty by modding the blade. However, I wouldn't worry about that too much in the case of a 1 in a 100,000 defect like a botched heat treat. In that case you may have some leverage and I would think that Jerry would cover it as long as it can be proven that the defect was there prior to the mods before the blade left the factory. Of course, unless you plan on stabbing cynder blocks and strapping C4 to it I think the blade would hold up fine to rough use even with mods that didn't cause stressors or thin portions of the blade out too much. Hope this helps.

I don't even want to think about what you would have to do to an FFBM to need the warranty!
