Question about Case Chestnut Jigged Bone Sod Buster Jr(CV)

How does the fit and finish compare to that of the Case CV sway back jack? I have done a search and could not find an answer. Thanks.

It's a very well put together and handsome knife. I have one, and my only issue is that I would have preferred a bird's eye pivot instead of the pin like pivot. Case said that the only reason for no bird's eye pivot was the additional steps required in the finishing process, making it less cost effective. I'm still confused over that response, but yes, you'll like the knife. Oh, and the fit and finish on the overwhelming majority of Case knives produced now are fine.

P.S. The best price I've found on the Case Soddy is at http://www.collectorknives.net/case-xx-chestnut-bone-cv-sodbuster-jr/, a forum sponsor.

I don't think it's a comparison that you can make like that. Case F&F varies between individual knives, not necessarily between patterns as a whole.

For my one example of each knife, the Sway Back Jack is better than my Sod Buster Jr., though only in a couple of details

The backspring of the Sod Buster Jr is slightly proud when fully open, and there were a couple of horizontal "scuff marks" - I wouldn't call them scratches per se - along the non-nick side of the blade that I assume were from inadvertent contact with a grinder or buffer. Not a big problem for me to polish out. Neither of the two are major concerns for a user, but they are variations from the ideal.

Otherwise, on the Sod Buster Jr, the bone slabs were of good and uniform color, there are no gaps, the backspring is flush when closed, the blade is centered with no play, it has good walk and talk, and the factory bevel was even on both sides and sharp (though with all factory grinds, could use some smoothing up).

My Case Chestnut Soddie came with way too much play, the pivot was downright loose. That said, a couple taps on a chunk of flat iron fixed that up completely and now the blade is centered, no wobble and smooth walk and talk. So I'm happy.

I find the bird's eye pivot reduces the chance for slop and wobble, especially with a sodbuster pattern knife that is used and subjected to all kinds of rough duty.

I ordered 2 at once and one was perfect, the other the only problem is an off center blade. I would not hesitate to order another. The covers are great and it's got cv as well so it's hard not to like. Can't go wrong with the soddies or sbj.

VERY pleased with mine:thumbup: Centered and SOLID CV blade, flush joints open and closed and topped with GORGEOUS Chestnut jigged bone covers.

NO sharp edges anywhere, nicely radiused edges/corners and just a very user friendly Sodbuster;) A terrific value in my mind:thumbup:

My experience mirrors Paul's, a very good knife indeed and a handsome carry. I really can't find any issues with it and the price was right too. The Swayback Jack seems to be a very highly finished knife , it may be due to these pattens being made on newer superior machinery perhaps?

Thanks, Will.

Thanks GT, I am really pleased with the quality and the terrific value is a plus;)

@ Will, a very nice Sodbuster as well:thumbup:

I love mine! Fit and finish is great

Very nice DeerTracker, I really like the jigging and how the Chestnut bone changes in different light:thumbup:

I've been on the fence about a Chestnut SBJ for a while now. This thread has convinced me to pull the trigger.

This is probably Case's best value sodbuster right now. Carbon steel and bone handles for $40, hard to beat! The thin handle profile makes it a great pocket carry as well! I have two copies and both are spot on, no issues.

I split the difference and went with the CV Chestnut and SS Amber Bone versions, one of each. I have been carrying the Amber Bone SS recently. The Sway Back Jack (no longer made in CV steel) is a great knife as well, but they are sufficiently different in size and features as to be difficult to directly compare.

Hi,

Thanks a lot you guys! Been wanting one of these for a while. This thread pushed me over the edge............

I'll put in my 2 cents as well. The knife has become my favorite Sodbuster. I really wish Case offered all of their SBJ's in CV. You will be very happy with the knife, I'm sure.

here's a side by side of the SBJ and SBJr.
Both chestnut and CV:D The SBJr is a chrissy present for my boss who has a good friend especially in the last few months in which the organisation I work for has treated me shabbily.
If had to make a criticism
SBJr is off centre when closed. Thats not a complaint tho. SBJr was a lot less expensive as well.
Other than that the finish of the bone is beautiful on both.
