OK, Here's the haps: I just recently bought my first Case(on here, thanks Stephen Tolar) and I liked it alot. So the other day at work I got into a knife discussion with this guy, whom I have known for virtually my whole life, who offered to sell me his old sodbuster for what he paid for it umpteen years ago. Apparently, he thought it collectable enough to hold it's value -- $40. So, being ignorant of almost all things Case, and having no restraint when it comes to blades, I bought it.
When I got home that night I searched for Case Sodbusters only to find them brand new at $20. Ouch. I cleaned and polished it, and it looks like brand new, ie. no chips, scratches, herpes, etc., and it doesn't appear to have been sharpened. I am aware that there are two sizes, large and small, and this one is large, somewhere around 5" closed.
Now, I am not as concerned about possibly overpaying for this knife as I am getting taken by a local yokal.
Obverse tang stamp indicates 1980's, reverse tang stamp reads "2138", which I'm guessing is the model number.
Did these sell for $40 in the 80's? Is there any difference between Sodbusters old and new? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rog
Edit: Just attended Case College and discerned pattern stamp - Smooth black synthetic thermoplastic rubber, 1 blade, pattern #38.
