Hi all. So i have had my Falkniven F1 for about 2 weeks now. I must say I am very pleased with the VG10's edge retention. It came razor sharp out of the box and it is still sharp but wont cleanly push cat paper like it first did. It tears a little when i try to slice computer paper. This is my first convex blade. I tried stropping it on a leather strop i made with Hand American diamond spray 1 Mircon. I think i might have dulled it a little. I used a sharpie and coated the edge. It removed the marker after a couple strokes. Is the blade too dull for the strop? Should i get some sandpaper and start with that? What grit do you think i should start with?

If anyone lives in Virginia and wouldn't mind showing me the ropes, i would greatly appreciate that. All comments and help are appreciated.

Thanks.

How much pressure are you using on your strop? In my experience, it is best to use just the weight of the blade alone.

If the edge is dull, pick up some 3M wet/dry sandpaper in 600, 1000, and 2000 grits and use that to sharpen. I have seen some of the more experienced sharpeners recommend using a phone book to convex rather than a mousepad.

Use a stropping motion on the sandpaper and make sure the sandpaper is as flat as possible. Again, only use the weight of the blade when sharpening. It will take a little bit of time and patience to get the technique down, but you'll be making hair splitting sharp edges in no time. Hope this helped.
