Question about cord wrapping

The post about the american tanto class reminded me that I've been meaning to ask this question for a while.
I've been doing cord wrapped handles on my knives, and using non-stainless steel (1075/1080). I'm worried that if the cord gets wet it will keep the steel wet and rust it badly and in a way that can't be fixed. I've tentatively solved this problem by gluing leather to the tang, then coating it with a (ostensibly waterproof) leather cement, but I'm still interested to know what others do about this issue.
Second, I'm worried about the cord wrap getting wet even if it's not going to damage the steel. Is this bad for the cord (I'm using paracord FWIW)? Will getting wet make it smell funny after a while? I've heard about soaking the cord in epoxy, but I'm not sure how to do it or if I have the means to do it. Or are cord wrapped knives not meant to be used in situations where they might get wet?
I'd appreciate any advise.
Thanks,
Chris
