Question about CRKT M16-04 Detent ball

Hey I'm not really sure where to put this .. I looked in the manufactures forum but didn't see one for CRKT..

Here's the problem.. I have an older No LAWKS M16-04 tanto .. and thought that the thing was operating great until I recieved The new M21-04 and found that the detent locks up a bunch better on it and the flipper actually has to have enough tention applied to it to get it to fly open..
I had noticed on my M16-04 it took very little effort to open it and the flipper didn't have enough pressure built up before it let it past the detent. So I took it apart and found that the Detent ball is sheared down almost flat..

Is there a way to replace the detent ball .. or a way for me to get a whole new inner liner for this knife?.. I love it and don't want to have to be without it.. but also don't want it opening up on accident. and would like for it to perform like it was intended..

Thanks a bunch for any help and sorry If I put this in the wrong area..

I myself am not sure about replacing it alone, maybe drop a dime to Crkt.

And to add, that is the one part on mine, i wondered how long it would last.

Mine being bit newer, but same design just with Lawks, i hope to hear good resolve to this for you and the many owners of this styled knife.

I actually prefer it with the detent worn down. My brother just bought a new M16 and I think it requires a ridiculous amount of energy to get the Flipper moving and it chews the hell out of my index finger. When I bought my M16 brand new a couple of years ago, it did not require nearly as much force as this new crop to flip open. It may be a change in the design or a flaw in my original, but the recess that the detent ball fits into on the new knives is much deeper.

BTW, I have never had mine open on accident. Not once.

Hey thanks guys for the replies..

I just sent them a email/parts request.. filling out my needs in the comment box.. .. and I will see where I can go from there..

Man the Newer M21 is a bit though to open up as well.. but not really that hard.. Mine works great and is matched with the amount of force applied to actuate the blade into full open.. I have heard stories about people having a hard time with some of them taking what sounds like extreme force to open.. but this M16 wont let the flipper work like it is suppose too it is so loose.. that ball is almost all the way sheared off.. I know it was not like this when I first received it.. I do how ever flip it a bunch .. and the little ball might not be matched for the AUS8 and chewed it up kinda fast.. I can take this knife and hold it in my hand closed with the blade facing down .. drop my hand and then stop it .. and the blade will fall out of the Detent.. in my line of work this is not acceptable..

Ok .. well jsut heard from the guys at CRKT.. then made a Phone call .. sounds like they will not be able to fix this problem.. but If I send my knife in they will replace it with something of Equal value.. they have Discontinued the M16-04 and they said they would send me out a M21-04.. And I said hey I just bought one of these and plus I have a custom sheath made for this one and Im kinda attached to it.. so they said basically .. send it in and they will let me have what ever CRKT product I want with a MSRP of $79.00 or just live with the way it is.. that makes me sad.. I really like this knife.. but they have no more large M16 tanto's plain edge blades.. at least they are willing to give me MSRP on it.. so I guess I am going to see if they have antyhing that I like or just live with it.. I wish they could just send me out a new liner or dentent ball .. I would try to fit it myself..

Ask them if it would be possible for them to switch your blade into a new handle. I don't know if they'd be willing to do that but it can't hurt to ask.

Yeah that was one of the options that I had asked about.. They said no due to the possible problem with the grind differing from the blade and liner not matching.. . and then leading to lock failure .. etc etc..

Does anyone know how to replace a detent ball on a liner? I know they sell them on knife parts sites.. .. but not sure on how to put one in.. and also not sure what size I need..
