On a Damascus blade does the pattern go all the way through the metal or is it just on the surface. I bought a Damascus chef knife on eBay and it looks like it's just on the surface. I got it cheap enough so I'm happy with the knife but I'm just wondering how Damascus knives should be. Thank you

Yeah, damascus is folded steel so the "pattern" goes all the way through. But it takes etching to bring it out so you can see it.

Yes.

Many blades have a damascus pattern acid etched onto their surface. Sounds like what you have. Purely decorative, and does not affect the quality of the blade one way or another.

It's just not damascus.
