Ok so i have seen pictures of the heat treat line, or Hamon? on the chopweiler and i have a question.

Does this line wear off with use like some hamons? Or does it go through the steel?

Im thinking of having my chopweiler dark acid stonewashed on the flats. And then a satin job down to the edge, but i dont want to lose that heat treat line.

I know it wont effect function either way but it looks awesome in the pics i have seen so id like to keep it LOL But if its going to wear off anyway ill just get the entire thing acid stonewashed.

Thanks fellas, Any help or info is appreciated.

WW, I'm no expert, but patina or acid wash would be putting a 'coloured' layer over the hamon, effectively covering it.
If you get the bevel polished it might require a light etch to bring out the hamon.
I'm sure more knowledgeable folks will chime in.

Thanks Elof!!

I was thinking of not treating the bevel down to the edge and only doing the flats so i can still see the line, but if this line will wear away with hard use, because i use this knife hard, i will go ahead and have the entire thing treated.

Honestly now that i think more about it, i might just decide on treating the entire thing anyways. I love the pictures where you can see that heat treat line, but once a natural patina formed on its own it would still become hard to see that line anyways.

Thanks Elof, you made me think about patinas!!!

I'm not saying it will disappear, only that patina is a layer on top of steel, so when it gets heavy it will cover hamon making it pretty much invisible.
Patina however can be avoided with some care.
