Ok, I am currently making my first sheath for my second knife. Its a simple little slim kiridashi going into a pouch type sheath. I don't have much extra money to go out and buy all the fancy tools and toys just for leather. I am using scraps sold by weight from Tandy leather, and this piece is white in color. I don't have any leather dye, but I do have india ink. I know it has been used fo a long time in wood working to make faux "ebony" but was wondering if I could use it to make patterns or designs on leather? So far I have glued the welt and marked out the stitching, but it is still flat so I can get an even pattern. I would like to finish this up tomorrow (7/27) if I could. Will india ink hold up well for a shop knife, no real outdoor use? It will be sealed.

Simple answer - generally yes - I have used at times and I know of many others that have as well and no real problems except the typicl "bleeding" at the edges of the inked areas due to the porposity of the leather.

Thanx for the (quick) answer! I had suspected it would bleed and don't really feel too concerned by it. I have an idea for a simple pattern that is non repeating. Now about application, should I apply it librally and let it soak in, crating more bleeding, or is there a way to apply and then remove any excess without causing streaking? How long should I let it cure before sealing it?

Sorry for all the basic questions, but the only experiance I have with leather is either for bike saddles or jackets! I have never worked with the stuff in any way shape or form!

Do a couple tests with some scraps that came in that Tandy lot.....most black dyes spread pretty well without streaking.
I would let dry overnight in a well ventillated area before sealing it.
