Question about Emerson Customs?

whats up doug?

you got something cooking?

A friend had one for sale but wasn't sure what the steel was and I couldn't find it anywhere. Don't think I will put that kind of scratch on such an old steel since I wanted it to use.

154CM/ATS-34 are good steels, and besides, when you are purchasing a custom Emerson, it isn't the steel you are paying all that money for.

right, but if I am going to pay all that money for a user I would like a better steel. just my own personal preference.

Sorry to say so, but you probably will not notice the difference. Most of us wouldn't. The difference between carbon steels and stainless steels, yes, but not "premium" stainless steels. For as many years as Emerson has been in business, I have not heard any complaints about the using quality of their products.

Doug, I don't think you and I would be able to notice the difference between the steels under normal use. Assuming that the 154CM is properly heat treated (and with Emerson, that is a good assumption), you wouldn't have any problems with its performance at all.

guys, thanks for the tips, this is something I am considering. I really like his customs.

You could consider that the newer knives from Ernie have a thicker liner on the lock side. These are all 154CM. The older ones have the same thickness lock on both sides.

So, if this knife has the thinner locks then it "may" be ATS-34 but not for sure. Nothing really wrong with the thinner locks, BTW.

I can understand that you want the latest steel however, ATS-34 (properly H/T and sharpened) will perform very well.

But, your resale (should you decide to sell it one day) will be better on a 154CM blade with the thicker lock.

I see lots of knives daily here and the performance of the blades have many more criteria other than what is etched on the blade.

My personal favorite blade steel, for a using knife, is still good old D2.

Take care, Neil

I'll have to agree with you on the D2 Neil, takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. I seem to be able to tell a slight difference while sharpening some of the new steels but I don't really know if it has to do with the steel, the geometry, or the heat treat (or all of the above!)
