Question about etched 110

I was just asked a question about a 110 I sold recently, and since I didn't know the answer I figured I'd check here.

The knife a basic 110 w/etched logo ca. 1964(?), still has the factory grind. The only thing unusual about it are the grip scales: black micarta. I've no knowledge of the knife's history prior to about 1985, when I picked it up in a pawn shop in CA.

Was this available as an option from the factory, could it have been sent back for customization, any other ideas?

Thanks.

Did you take a pic before you sold it??? What did the etching say/depict???

I hope you got at least $75 for it... :)

Didn't take a pic, sorry; I had a buyer who was already interested. The etching said "BUCK."

I kinda wondered if that was the case, that pawn shop had a number of Bucks, and I've always wondered if they were from someone who had worked at the factory or something. I used to refer to it as my "coffee-break knife," with the thought some Buck Employee put it together for himself.

I'm sure it was one of the early ones, I had a couple others similar to it but not as nice.

It wasn't that expensive; as I recall I skipped lunch for a day or three to get the funds to buy it. Actually, I can recall three or four etch-marked 110s I had, and that was the only one I purchased; I traded new 110s for the others.

The micarta-handled one was just weird; the really neat one had a blade worn down to about 1/4" wide, worn grips, and "USMC" stamped on the bolster. I asked the guy how it got so worn and he told me he'd sharpened it every week for thirty-plus years on those little stones that come with pilot survival knives. I swapped a new knife for it and we were both happy.

Appreciate the info about Mr. Oden, but I no longer have any Bucks to dispose of. Most of them went to collectors or users; one guy bought 20 or so, so I guess you might see some of them surface on the 'Bay.

well ...were was that pawn shop?
i sure could use me one even in wood...
after ya email that to me ...
go have yo self a nice drink of your choice of bev... :D

btw on dem old 110s after ya get past a 3/8 o de edge gone
dey wont stay sharp long as ya out o the hard edge temper...

IIRC, the pawn shop was in San Diego, or somewhere in that area. I never did figure out the city limits there.

Only hardened for 3/8" at the edge? Were the early Kalingas hardened the same way?

personal experance from mid to late 1970's ...
i had a rep at work of getting edges scary sharp... so...
had several guys bring me 110's and some 500's knives to sharpen that had edges way back from were they were to start... some of them i could get them to almost cut hair then go dull...
now what they brought me i can not say if they had tryed a grinder or sander on so it is possable they had lost heat treet all togeather...
it may be that most won't ...
your smilage may varry...
