question about face mills

Use the correct insert for the type of metal you want to cut. I know (expensive mistake)!!! That is why there are so many different types.

I received this face mill as a gift last year and was wondering if I can use any triangular insert with it or must I use he cheap carbide ones that are sold for it ? http://www.grizzly.com/products/Face-Mill/G2861

tips tools as far as memory goes should be the same, there are different sizes but the sizes are uniform. if this makes any sense. small triangle=small triangle etc. take the holder with you to a machine supply house (lots of luck doing this). there is only on left in this area. tips are held to tight tolerances and as long as they all seat the same and lock in they should cut equally. been a while but hope this might help

The reason that I ask is that on Grizzlys web site they have several different small triangular inserts but they claim that they are for different models..I don't know how to cross reference them. To make it worse the prices range from $3.00 for 4 of them up to $150.00 for a ten pack... I'm kind of lost here.

You have to match the part number of the cutters to the one you intend to order. Some common sizes are manufactured by different manufacturers. There is such a variety because companies typical make the cutter design proprietary so the can make more money on the inserts (same as with inkjet printers and ink) and inserts are also used in other tools such as indexable end mills and some hobbing cutters. Also it is worth noting that you get what you pay for in that USA made cutters are much better and last longer then their overseas counterparts. Just remember to match up the order numbers so you get the right cutter bits. I hope this helps as the world of machining is two things to those that are involved with it (mysterious when you are new to it and always expensive)

Search on McMaster Carr for carbide inserts and you will find TGP and TGU inserts. Match your dimensions and read the descriptions to find what you need. Also, try contacting them and they may know exactly what will fit the Grizzly face mill.

mscindustrial.com is also a good source. I'm with zanderman. Looks like TPG or TPU. I use a lot of TPG-322 inserts. The TPG is the shape, the 3 means a 3/8 circle can be inscribed in the insert, the 2 means 2/16 thick, and the second 2 means the corner radius is 2/64. You should be able to find a chart to help with identification on mscindustrial.com. Match the grade with the material you are cutting. There's charts for that too.

As tinker pointed out, any TPU/TPG 32x series carbide insert will work. If you are wondering what type carbide to use, I normally use a C-6 but have used C-2 and C-5 for just about anything. You can find these inserts on sale either on the bay or from MSC/Enco for $1-$2 each from time to time. I got a bunch of really good kennemetal inserts off ebay for less than .50 each.

HGRauctions is on ebay as well as its store in Euclid,Ohio. It sells lots of kennemetal inserts for really cheap prices.
