Question about Figure-4 Trap

For those of you who have successfully snared game using the figure-4 trap, I have a question: what did you use for bait?

I have only caught mice and one rat in a figure-4 trap. I used peanut butter or cheese for bait. My bait stick was split and I forced the bait into the split so that the animals would push against it as they tried to extract the bait.

Apple might be a good bait for some herbivores.

When I snare possums I make up a lure mix which I rub on to the pole that I've attached the snare to. I mix the lure in a small plastic jar with a screw top. I use flour, icing sugar and a scented essence or oil.... let's say five tablespoons full of flour to one of icing sugar ....and just a couple of drops of oil. I like aniseed oil but I have also used imitation vanilla, almond essence, pepperment essence and cinnamon powder. Other folks use other things. I have heard of curry powder and eucalyptus oil being used. The proportions of ingredients are not critical in my experience.

Some folks use animal urine as a lure.... and I must try it some time myself, but I want to find out how to preserve it so it doesn't deteriorate.... I think they use sodium benzoate.

I don't have a ton of experience with the figure 4, but I do know that you want to bait the animal with "commodity items". Assuming you are in the wilderness and don't have access to such a variety of store bought items, you would want to choose natural foods that would otherwise be difficult for the animal to obtain. For example, if you were baiting a rabbit, use something out of their reach like berries from a tree. If it was just vegetation from the ground, they would have no other compelling reason to come visit your trap.
