Question about first Emerson

Hello,

I'm about to purchase my first Emerson, and I think it will be a Commander. Initially, I had settled for one with a black coating, but those seem next to impossible to find. Now I see that they can be found with either a stonewashed or a satin finish. Which is best? Which is newest? Anything I should be aware about any one of those finishes?

Thanks for reading!

All the cool people get stonewashed. It will come back in stock because Emerson makes their knives in batches. The stonewash looks gorgeous and blows away the black.

I'll agree to that. The stonewash is really, really nice.

Unless you have a need to be non-reflective, there isn't much of reason to coat stainless steel. Unless you are really into black.:D

154cm will rust.

With that said I would go stonewashed for a user that you will take care of and coated for a user that you will neglect.

IMHO

Thanks for all your replies.

I've never had 154CM rust on me, but I take good care of my users / beaters.

Problem is I can only find satin finish in stock, no stone washed. If you guys know of any retailer that might have them in stock, please let me know.

Yeah, I didn't take care of my EKI 1911 Knife of the year...Yeah right. It will rust. I carried mine for SD every night at work for over a year. I always kept it oiled/polished with Flitz. What I found is it would rust by the thumbstud from oils/contaminants from my skin. Trust me I take care of all of my knives.

Anyhow, you seem to be going for satin so I would say order direct from EKI. That is what I have always done and I have never had a single problem. I don't mind paying a little more for a lot of piece of mind though.

Good luck in your hunt.

If you go to the official Emerson website they have a list of "Prestige" dealers. A few of them are Ebay sellers and if you check them out I see some Stonewashed Commanders in stock. They are a little pricier than stores like New Graham but not by much.

Man, I re-read my post today and I think I may have come off wrong yesterday. It was kind of an afterthought of mine. Since I recommended Stonewash for a user that you take care of. Then I remembered how annoyed I got with my 1911 and All of my users since have been coated black. The coating will wear off where the washers rub and it will be as smooth as satin and the rest of the blade remains protected. I hope this clears up anything in my last post.

Thanks. I think your original post was very clear, but now your clarification got me confused :p

So: you suggest I get the stonewashed finish as opposed to the black one? How about satin?

Okay, I will put it this way. I love all of my EKI's. I have bought them for my father also and he loves them. I have seen satin mean a few different things over the years that I have been into EKI. Sometimes it seemed BB'ed, sometime coated grey, sometime satin and others stonewashed. I like to order from EKI because I call and talk to the fam and get a personalized order so to speak.

I guess what I meant to say is even if you take care of your blades when I thought twice I realized that so did I. I worked hard for that knife I used as SD to make a living. So I guess I would say satin or stonewashed is just awesome from EKI but for a no BS EKI I prefer coated. I hope this helps. I have seen you around and know your a good guy so I am really trying to help you out.

Thanks a lot --- I really appreciate it. Now, if I could only afford 2, one of each ...

STONEWASHED!!! It looks awesome, if you scratch it it will blend in with the rest of the blade, and its intimidating as hell. If you use your com for sd if you ever pulled it out the shine off of it will get your point across :D

Over'n Out

Goodspeed

Alot of sellers/dealers mistakenly list stonewash blades as "satin finish". I think the silver coating has been dropped for at least a year.

Then I'm a little confused. The Pharmacy has both on their catalog --- but only SF in stock?

If they are listing Satin, it may be old stock from a few years back. Hold out for the Stonewashed - much nicer.
