Question about flipper on Kershaw Skyline / Fun at Wally World

Hey BF,

So I'm going to start a little off topic because I always tend to ramble but I'll get to my point (no pun intented). So I went to Wally World the other day (the one near my work, not by my home) to pick up some sandpaper for sharpening (I'm a freehand amateur but I'm having pretty good success with the sandpaper on mousepad method, using an adjustable Carbide pull through if the angle needs reprofiling), and I figured I'd take a look at what knives they had in stock. I went back there and found a bunch of Gerber, Camillus, Winchester and some other relatively common cheap knives including being stocked full of every type of Bear Grylls knife/tool invented. So I passed on by then figured I'd check the ammo case to see if any .22lr came in. Well it did not of course, however what was in the case was an unorganized pile of assorted Kershaw, Buck, Gerber, Camillus knives all in individual boxes, no clamshell plastic. To my surprise they had a nice assortment of Kershaws, Buck, 110's and 119's among various other buck folders. So I got the guy to open the case and started to browse. I saw a Kershaw Blur Tanto then took it out of the box to find a Kershaw Brawler. I told the guy it was mislabeled, he didn't care just put it back in there. So naturally I went through all the cheap tags looking to get a Blur for $10-20 but no luck there. Most of the labels turned out to be accurate. It was then I noticed a Camillus "Beast" for $68. It advertised a Tanto Blade made from VG-10 steel and G-10 handles. Being that I'm a somewhat new (and not extremely wealthy) collector, the "nicest" steel I own is a D2 Kershaw Outcast (Kukri) and the "nicest" steel on a folder is Sandvik 14C28N on my Leek and Blur which I am quickly becoming a huge fan of that steel. So I bought the Camillus Beast knife simply because of the nice materials and went home. Wasn't impressed with the knife at all, oversized and just seemed impractical. It cut great and all but the G-10 handles were smooth and almost silky like and seemed like they would be slippery when wet. Anyway didn't seem like a bad knife just not for me, not going to get too off topic hopefully so I'll leave it at that. I returned it the next day, went back to browse through the pile of knives in the ammo case and the employee this time stood over my shoulder the whole time making suggestions which I didn't mind except the hovering over me, but I get it, people steal shit. So I made conversation with him while browsing and showed him the "Blur Tanto" box that had a Brawler in it for $65 or so and took my Blur Tanto (that's already part of my EDC rotation) out of my pocket and showed him what the knife should be and what it was. He actually seemed interested and did take it off the shelf to sort out so hopefully nobody spent $65 on a Brawler. Anyway, I ended up picking up a Kershaw Skyline for $30, G-10 handles that actually grip, 14C28N blade, great knife for the price that I'm sure you are all too familiar with.

Apologies, I warned you I tend to ramble.

My question now is the Kershaw Skyline I got compared to my other flippers almost feels unassisted. My Leek, I press the button and the blade is deployed and locked in the blink of an eye, my Thermite slower than the Leek but still "snaps" out. With this Skyline, the flipper will not deploy the blade to lock on it's own. It requires pushing the flipper and the slight flick of the wrist and then it locks right into place in a flash. I'm perfectly fine with this I just wanted to know if it's supposed to be this way or if it's been de-assisted or is messed up in some way. The lock holds fine. Blade is just ever so slightly off center but no biggie for a $30 flipper, and I really have to force it to get any sort of blade play. Is it supposed to be like this, where I flick my wrist while pushing the flipper, or should it be like my Leek that when I touch the button it's out faster than I can see it? Also do any of you guys ever find any decent knives at your local Wally Worlds? This is the first time I've experienced anything of real quality there. Even if my Skyline is defective they had Buck 110's and 119's, can't really mess those up.

Thanks BF and again, sorry for my ramblings. Mods if I did anything wrong it was done with the best of intentions:) :foot:

The Skyline is a manual knife and only ever was a manual knife. I can understand the confusion because Kershaw loves "SpeedSafe"-ing all the things, but no, nothing is wrong with your Skyline.

I prefer manual knives, so I like the Skyline a lot for a cheap knife, even though it's small for my tastes.

The skyline is indeed a manual flipper; you did not get a defect.

You can adjust/oil the pivot to get it even more "flickable".

Enjoy!

It is not assisted, so the knife you have functions as it should. I will add however that in my opinion Skylines tend to be stiff out of the box especially for a flipper. Spend an hour or so practicing and it will break in as you get better at flipping it. Eventually you wont need any wrist flicking.

I love my Skyline. I've had it about 3 weeks and it flips open and locks fine now. I'd work it while watching TV.

Ahh okay very glad to hear it's functioning as it should :) It's really a beautiful little piece for $30. I almost enjoy this more than the assisted flippers. I like how it's a flipper but I can control the speed and it's pretty smooth, as I did oil it up. My Blur Tanto I try not to use around people at work too much just because I flick the thumb stud and the blade is out like a shot. Doesn't bother me any, but would scare certain people at work. I'm an Electronics/Laser/Optics Tech, most techs at my work carry a blade and most are assisted openers as one hand cutting tasks are common but we have engineers and scientists coming through all the time and some of them look at you funny when you whip a blade out but they give us X-Acto Knives and Shears and expect us to use them for all cutting tasks? Nope. Company policy doesn't allow weapons per se but knives are tools and none of the bosses blink since they know we can't do our jobs with our issued Xacto and scissors so it's actually pretty cool everyone gets to carry their blade of choice. Hell, the bosses all carry Spydies, ZT's, and Benchmades. I think they'd take issue if I walked in with a BK-9 but anyway, I think I love Kershaw more and more with every knife I buy. Now for tip up or tip down, just got a new set of torx precision screwdrivers, gonna go play...

Like the others suggested, just keep breaking it in. Once you've flipped it several hundred times it'll get looser, but will likely get gritty (you'll be wearing a groove for the detent ball to track through, and the metal dust has nowhere to go. So once that happens, take it apart, clean it out, and lube it up. Should flip like a dream after that.

Enjoy the new Skyline!

Thank you and thanks to everyone else who replied. I just tried tip up carry and dont like how much blade shows so I put the clip back to tip down. Breaking it in as we speak. It's a bit small for my hands but I'm really loving this little knife. G-10, Sandvik 14C28N, $30??? Yes please. I'm actually enjoying the break in perfecting the flick. Appreciate everyone's responses :)

Or-
You can take it apart and mirror polish all the mating surfaces, oil and dream flip till the cows go to roost....

Done and done lol. First knife I've ever disassembled, while it feels SLIGHTLY stiffer now I got the blade perfectly centered. Now to continue flipping...

I'm also considering putting a mirror polish on the blade now as well but I'm not sure how that would turn out or if I'd like it.

Good lawd man! You weren't kidding about the rambling thing.

So the question is "have you ever found quality knives for sale at Walmart"? Yes I have. I check there every time I'm in there just to see what they have. And .22 ammo too, which they never have ya know

P.s.

Walmart has a good selection of spydercos on their website, plus if you know someone that works there, you might be able to get a decent discount;)

Haha guess I should've added a "tl;dr" at the bottom of the OP ;). Interesting to see the .22lr shortage is national not just around here. Also, I did check out their website and there are plenty of great Spyderco's priced what looks really good to me compared to other sites and a Spydie is really the next knife I want to get to "step up" so to speak. This begs another question, do I still need to look out for fakes if I order from a big box store like WM or are the fakes really restricted to the bay and such? I suppose I could have it shipped to the store and hold it and look for all the signs up close and personal and if it doesn't seem right, return it then and there, but having little experience I'd hate to hand back a good one even after I watched all the videos and read the threads on what to look for. Thanks gentlemen.

Sounds like a good plan. Take a look before you buy, but I would think you'd be ok.

Just had to plant that idea didn't you :). I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Not perfect, I wish I spent more time around the thumb studs but it's my first attempt so I'm very pleased. And I finally figured out how to post pictures :)

Nicely done.

On my keepers I usually polish the pivot area and sometimes the lock area for smooth, crisp, fast action.(sounds like a 70's commercial)

At first glance I thought that kubaton was a plug that you use to...nevermind...:o
Giggity:D

But, good job! I have only mirror polished pocket clips and edges so far. You did an awesome job!

Hahaha nah I've never used it for that lol, or anything else for that matter but it was a gift so I carry it. Thank you for the compliment and thank you Cicatriz too. I notice small scratches you can't see in the pics but overall I'm really happy with it. I really dulled it while sanding and I'm not the best sharpener but I managed to get this back to shaving sharp after polishing without scratching it anymore so I'm actually more proud of that. I went with wet sandpaper 180, 400, 800, 1500, 2000, 3000 while just washing with dish soap and water in between grits. Polished by hand at the end with Wright's Silver Cream but I didn't notice any difference at all it looked exactly the same as after the 3000 paper.
