I was just looking on Gerbers website and saw the Applegate-Fairbain Mini-Covert. I saw that it was only 36 bucks or whatever and then saw that it was 154-CM... ive always like the knife, just never wanted to pay 100 pluss dollars for one. Now i know that some of the older models were aus-6 or some type of 400 series. the gerber website says 154-cm..... wlamart has them but says they are 400 series steel. would they produce different versions for different retailers? or are the ones at walmart just older? im really tempted just to order it from gerber so i know it will be 154-cm. god----trying to explain why i dont want it to be aus-6 or 420 to my girlfriend... nearly impossable!

Thanks for any info

Hi Guys
Just checked my mini-covert, nothing on the blde, box or paperwork.Cool little knife for light use. I only bought mine to complete the set.Full size, covert and mini.

Thanks for checking guys, I guess it boils down to the luck of the draw. For light work and EDC I’m sure I wont have any problems with whatever steel it is. The only steel I refuse to buy and use is AUS-6. Out of all the steels from 440 to cpm-440V AUS-6 is the only one I’ve ever had any complaints about, except for everything below 440 which isn't even really an option in my opinion.

Jazzman if yours won’t take an edge I’m guessing its probably AUS-6 because to my knowledge the earlier models of the mini covert used AUS-6. That happens to be the same problem me and my friends have encountered with that steel.

No, the Mini-Coverts sold at Wal-Marts do not have 154CM blades. They are made in Taiwan and are well made little folders for the money. What problems have you had with AUS-6? I also have to ask, does your girfriend really care what type of steel it has? I mean, unless she uses a knife everyday single day to cut boxes, cardboard and what-not, for the average user the Mini-Covert will do it's job as intended. If it gets dull, just sharpen it.

Just picked up one of these yesterday at Walmart for $36. Don't know well it cuts yet but it is a tight little package for the money, and about the right size for a everyday "pocket knife"...

They are advertised on Gerber's web site as having 154CM blades, but no markings on the box or knife to confirm that.

i sell the knife where i work and my boss carries one and i can say without a doubt that ours are not 154cm. it's probubly the same 400 series that they use on most of their other knives. i've sharpened my bosses and it doens't take much effort. it also happens alot.:)

I got my Mini through osogrande.com for about $34. It was advertized with 154CM and, if I remember correctly, it said 154CM on the box. However, it says Taiwan on the R side spine. The L side of the blade has Applegate-Fairbairn sigs. It has a large angle but sharpens to shave hair and cut paper easily. It walks and talks smoothly and has a nice little "click." Fiddled with the blade tension and lubed a tad to get it running smoothly. I guess it could be AUS ?, but it is good for the $.

With the introduction of the Silver Trident and Emerson/Gerber automatic, Gerber has gone to using 154 as a standard cutlery steel for their products, particularly the tac/combatives models.

New Coverts are marked 154CM for this reason.

Saw Mini Covert in San Francisco ("We Be Knives") so marked. My full size model, which is pre-154, is not so marked (obviously). Saw older Mini at a PX last week likewise not marked as 154.

Gerber is doing excellent heat treat on the 154 models from those I've worked with (ST and E-G auto).

Sharpening wise I've had no trouble with either Mini or full size using Spyderco ceramic sticks or India stone, fine side. However, I have gotten those ones and twos knives that just won't sharpen regardless of your skill or stone/stick.
