OK, first off I have to admit this is only a slightly "knife" related question.
But I did a search of this forum just now and I'm not really sure where to enter this question.
However I have come to trust you guys here on the Knife maker forum and so I again turn to you for advice.

So here goes nothing!

THE SITUATION: I'm right in the middle of finishing a hunting knife for my boss.
I work for an excavation company and on the jobsite yesterday we dug up a cool looking granite rock from about 25 feet deep.
Right away I saw from the glacier-flattened sides it had, that this 8 inch by 4 inch rock would actually sit on a shelf nicely.

I got the idea of using my hammer drill to set into the rock a type of wire holder for my boss's knife.

It would be a fitting place for the knife.

THE PROBLEM : The problem is that while the granite rock looks great cleaned up and wet, the moment the outer surface drys all the interesting colors fade away.

THE QUESTION :
Is there something I could coat the granite rock with to bring out the natural colors more?

First I'd try to get it polished at a rock shop. If that failed, I'd clean it up, dry it really well, and go over it with a clear coat epoxy. It's available in hobby shops and puts a nice, clear sheen on. It is very thin so it flows well without bubbles.

There are products that are used in the granite industry. One that works really well is StoneTech High Gloss Lacquer.

I am going to make a note of that product Keith. That being said Alan , I would first take Genes advice and go to a "Rock Shop" . I don't know if you recall any of the "Copper Culture Artifacts" that I have posted but my Buddy Is quite the Gem,Mineral and Float Copper Hunter. He is also in the process of trying to find a product to coat some of the Float Copper that he finds. We just had this same conversation last week ,Everything that he has tried to date has yellowed or changed the look of the copper (and not for the better ).Most have been off the shelf hardware store , menards , home depot kind of products. I have to get up to the Gem & Mineral Shop sometime very soon and my Buddy is coming along for the ride just to ask the same question. This might be strictly an issue because what he is trying to coat (copper) and might not effect quartz. I am just cautioning you because putting it on is much easier than taking it off :) If you do find an answer before me please post your findings,I'll do the same. Oh BTW , for your Boss  :D ??? Boy you better look out cause you could take a rippin from your co-workers for that one :)

Not to be morbid, but call your local "memorial" supplier... y'know like gravestones. Maybe they would flatten and polish one side for you?

A good place to get a cheap piece of surfaced granite is the head stone engravers also. I know several people that got a nice scrap chunk for free.

I work at a granite countertop fabricating business and we let people take all the scrap they want. It saves us having to pay for it to be dumped in a landfill.

Ok, I had no luck looking for the stuff they put on fireplace stone to give that cool look Im also after.
Oh we found the stuff alright, but the money to get it was just too much...

David, Im a bit upset to learn that Menards was not going to sell anything that would help me...(Menards was my backup "PLAN - B")

My wife says she is on the way home from getting me something for fresh granite countertops...we shall see....

So Im guessing that the Lacquer I used on a wood table top is not going to work?
