Question about grinder motor

I am a fairly new knife maker and I am looking to upgrade from my 1x30 harbor freight belt grinder to one that would accommodate a 2" belt. Currently, the 1x30 has a 1/3 HP and I was hoping to get one with at least a 1/2 HP. I scavenged a 1/2 HP 1725 RPM Craftsman motor from an old wood lathe and I was wondering if I could hook this up to a Kalamazoo 2FSM that doesn't come with the motor to save a few bucks. Would this motor work effectively on the Kalamazoo chassis for knife making or should I just spend the extra money for the grinder that comes with the motor attached. Thanks for any help that you can provide me!

Sorry I can't help you, but on a similar vein, is there an older thread (or link) that talks about belt grinder construction?

Welcome Theo. Fill out your profile with your location and some info so we know a bit about you. It may allow someone with an extra motor, old VFD, or other assistance to help you out.

If your motor has a shaft that will take a "V" pulley, then, YES, you can use it with that Kalamazoo. 1/2HP is sufficient, but 3/4HP will be a bit better.
