Question about H1 logo, and does this DF2 Salt look legit?

So I'm the proud owner of a new DF2 Salt. I'm not as familiar with Spyderco as with other brands, so I'd appreciate it if y'all could tell me if this looks legit to you. The only thing that has me questioning it is the 1 in the H1 logo. I read that there may be some carbon deposits from the engraving process in the 1, so that may corrode while the rest of the blade should not. I also read that the easiest way to verify authenticity is to give the knife a saltwater soak and to check for corrosion after.

Well, I gave this one a soak, and the 1 changed. It didn't corrode, but it looks like there was some kind of paint or coating on it that has now come off (it was a lot darker pre-soak and upon pulling it out of the soak I saw the coating come off when I wiped the blade). I think it looks better this way, I just want to be sure it's an authentic Spyderco in real H1 as I plan to expose it to a lot of ocean water very soon and want to be sure it will perform.

Thanks in advance!

I can't comment on the logo but I can confirm that the 1 the blades I have used in salt water as begun to lightly corrode. Neither of mine have wiped off. The grind lines on your knife look authentic.

According to Sal & co, the corrosion on the logos is the result of metal particles from the press/grinder sticking in the recesses of the stamped areas. Can't remember the recommended method for removal, but I do believe there is one.

Based on everything I've read I'm pretty sure it's authentic H1, but I've never read anything about a dark coating over the 1 as it ships from the factory. I'm starting to wonder if maybe that was a thin layer of oxidation that simply wiped off after the soak loosened it... All of the Spyderco H1 blades I see online have a dark 1 and a lighter H, but this one only looks that way at certain angles. from other angles the 1 is lighter and the H is darker.

At this point I think I'm just going to keep and use it and if it turns out to be a fake then I paid for a learning experience.

That's nice to know but mine are users and as long as the edge, pivot and lock bar aren't showing any signs of corrosion, I'm fine with it.

I hear you. I plan on using this in a saltwater environment and not taking particularly good care of it, so I just want to be sure it's real so I know it's actual H1 and won't rust up on me when I need it.

I'm not really concerned with the appearance, just reliability and longevity.

Where did you buy it? If it's not from a flea market, gun show, craigslist, eBay, Amazon, or some outfit in China, the chances of it being a genuine Spyderco are much higher. If you're still uncertain, send it to Spyderco for evaluation with $5 for return postage.

Haven't heard of, or seen, any fake Salts.
There are definitely fake Dragonfly Salts out there.

Seems legit to me, but mine is exactly the opposite in regards to the logo. Black 1, light H, at any angle

And yes, unfortunately there are fake H1 Dragonflys out there...a big auction site comes to mind

Hmm...this thread makes me curious.

This is my sister's DF....

She got it from the Big River website. I've used it, sharpened it several times and never gave its authenticity a second thought until now. I do think the FRN feels ever so slightly different from my VG10 and ZDP examples, but again, never gave it a second thought. I'll investigate. The fact that you even have to wonder about such things, even from large, well-know marketplaces is pretty darn sad. :(

ThePeacent and ZuluKilo, my logo looked like those before I soaked it in saltwater overnight, then the dark coating on the 1 wiped right off. Almost all of the pics I see show logos with the dark 1. Made me start to wonder...

The thread got me thinking heavily too.

I checked all my Salts, my Pool ones and Sea ones, or Kitchen ones.
They all have the black 1 and clear H, but then I was putting my Fixed Blade on the belt today and noticed this:

I guess it's due to the DLC coating, because a normal color pattern on the H! would not be visible, just my guess. Maybe they applied this new etching technology (model is from 2015 first production) on the newer Dragonfly 2?

Thanks ThePeacent. The logo on that fixed blade looks just like the one on my DF2 Salt. Do you recall if it always looked that way?
