Question about handle materials

I'm just wondering why EKI doesn't vary the materials in the handles of their production knives. From what I've seen most of them have g10 handles. I really like the look of the canvas micarta I've seen in the pictures of some customs. I think some different materials would do well in the production market as many of us will never have the opportunity to own a custom.

Just my 2 cents.

EKI does use G10 on their production models (the Raven and the PUK uses a "Proprietary Polymer"). I too would love to see other materials used, to include Carbon Fiber and Micarta. I have even gone to the extent to drop rather course hints. :D

One option you have it to have a production knife rescaled by a third party. Here is a couple of Commanders that I had done in Green Canvas and Green Linen Micarta.

Ross has also had scales made in contoured G10 and Carbon Fiber.

John and Clay,

I agree that it would be nice to have some alternative handle materials on the knives.

John - you are always looking for an excuse to post more pictures of Commanders.. :p

My guess as to why EKI doesn't offer various handle materials in the production market is as follows.
From a production and sales standpoint, they offer quite a few knives already. They have their base models, many of which are offered in both spearpointA) and Tanto(B) versions. Then they offer two different blade coatings, satin and black, which can be either serrated or non serrated; and finally the knife can have either black or green handles.
Each of these variations essentially doubles the number of knives they offer.
To add one more variation, such as handle material, would double the number of possibilities again.

The resultant sales are not likely to increase a whole lot. Few people (mostly those who frequent this forum) would want to buy an additional knife, just so they could have the micarta handle,or whatever it may be. Along the same note, a different handle material would not convince Joe Knife-user to spend that kind of money on a quality knife, if they aren't willing to buy one with the G-10 handles originally.

Anyways, that is my two cents. Anyone want to rebuttle?

Post more pics please!

Ross:

I thought I'd gotten over those pics of that commander, but once again I find myself walking into your visual ambush! ;) I'm reaching towards the ground trying to pick my jaw off the floor ( again )

I'm not into S&M by any means, but I was wondering if you could post any more pics of that Lovely knife !
(I know I'm going to regret asking)

BTW: My wife agrees, Flips do have cuter A$$e$ ;)
