This may be off the topic of knives, but may affect all of us who are full time knifemakers. What do alot of you guys do for health insurance?Do you join a small business type co-op to get good rates?Go to a independent insurance agent?I have been with a insurance company for a few years and lately they have been raising my premium drasticlly(I pay almost $300.00 dollars a month now)I can't afford to keep paying that but at the same time I can't afford to be without insurance. So, I have a delema and was wondering how other knifemakers tackle the problem. Thanks in advance!

That's a good question Rick, talk about a rock and a hard spot! The company I work for, picks up my policy ($210), but to add Audra it costs an additional $200 per month, Audra's kid's are covered by her ex's policy, mine are under Indian health care services, or it would be an additional $400 this is getting a little out of hand!!Boss said his policy took an 18% bump recently ( with reduced coverage!) There has to be a better way! Add this to what I pay for auto and homeowners thats a pretty good chunk of money that could be spent on better things ( milling machine, surface grinder, engraving stuff........) Mike

I have to PAY at the PUMP!!!! $475 per month worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is no easy answer here. Most health insurance polices vary from $200 a month for a single person to over $600 a month for a family plan. If you don't personally pay it, your employer does and adds it to the cost of doing business. If you try to do without health insurance, you run the very real risk of being wiped out financially by a major illness.

The situation really hurts small businesses and the self-employed.

Tom, is that for premium or just plain ole unleaded?? In Wyo. good health care is few and far between, been tempted to try the local vet....Kinda a luck of the draw system...on a more positive note Audra is getting better at super-gluing herself back together

My wife works for insurance while I run my shop. The four kids are all grown and gone, so just the two of us now.

Hi All,
I see this is a very complex issue. And it also sounds like I'm not the only one dealing with high insurance.Mike I agree with you,by the time we pay for all the insurance and taxes, there's not a whole lot left.We have a small business association here in northeast Ohio that I'm going to call Monday. They advertise that they have low insurance rates for small business owners because they pool everyone together to get the good rates from major companys.I may hear the same thing, then I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and pay!It just doesn't seem right for them to raise my premium when I've never had a claim.Oh well,I guess they do it because they can.

Mike,BTW how is Audra's hand.I hope everythings healed and working again.Next year at the Blade show I'm gonna bring my EMS kit, just in case she needs some stitches taken out again,

Tom,That does seem awful high for insurance,of course maybe they have seen the TNT that you make and figure with all the holes you have to drill that surelly you'll miss with the drilling and put a bit through your hand.haha

that is for a very thorough coverage plan thru Kaiser for my wife and I and our one daughter who is still at home (sort of), Kaiser has their own facilities and it covers full hospitalization with a drug plan and dental...but we dont use it much and every month i gotta pay it!!!!! but my wife plays soccer and I make knives so Id be really worried if I didnt have it...to say the least.
