What is the purpose of the cutout at the base of the blade?

Is it for sharpening?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

It has more than 1 purpose & its called a cho'. 1 purpose is a blood dripper, another is when you're sharpening your khukuri with the chamak you wont pass the cho' & scratch up your handle. It also serves religious purpose its a sign of fertility & resembles a cow's hoof. Cows are sacred to the people of nepal.

when & if you were to thrust said khukuri into something that will bleed the blood will drip at the cho' as opposed to coming down the handle making it slippery

ahhhh, I was wondering, I have a sgt khadka bonecutter on the way and wanted to know what the cutout was about

The 'kukri' I started with back in 1987 was/is (still have it) one of the cheap ones from India. The cho was crudely ground in and the inside dimensions form a sharp angle.

I found out early on it was useful as a wire stripper.

The Cho on H.I. khukris are much more precise and don't make very good wire strippers.

Khukuri's are good for chopping down poles holding up coaxial cable:D
For stripping coax I'd use the karda.
I've thought about modifying the cho for opening up beer bottles:p

I'm feeling a little stir crazy I may have to go out in the snow hiking Sunday. The Bahadur has been getting the nod but I think I'm going to take the M43 or the 20AK out and drop something big. Maybe I'll bring the GPS for a run then post the coordinates of the drop. Better yet maybe I'll bring the GPS and find a Geocache then drop something big on the Geocache:eek:
Sorry I'm tired of being sick and tired of being indoors!

If you do modify a khuk to open bottles, be careful:D

Once upon a time there was a 12" funky little knife called a Juri (which I think is a type of bird maybe?) Anyway, it had a little cut out/cho that was shaped just like a bottle cap lifter. Needless to say, a few of us tried it and it worked. I would say probably 3/4 of us cut ourselves in the process:o

stickfred, thanks the take care clinic at Walgreens says I might have an upper respiratory infection, but my lungs are clear and pulse o2 is at 98% Coughing like I have bronchitis though. I'm going to run a trail tomorrow and see if I can get something to break loose.
Steely; I used a cheap set of 1/8" stamps from Harbor Freight and a scrap piece of 1095HC and made a few custom bottle openers. Mine has my son's initials and his date of birth on one side and my fathers and grandfathers initials with "gone too soon" on the other side. That's always on me:cool:

Oldschool45,

You might want to check with the physician if you have an early onset of pneumonia.
This is no joke.

I wish you get well soon!
