Question about hinderer vintage series

I have a hinderer vintage series with the smooth walnut handle. I’m not sure their process in finishing the handle scale but it seems like it could be a bit better. I don’t have a ton of experience in refinishing wood but I have done my own handle scales on a few of my own forged knives. Some black walnut and other hardwoods.

I guess what I’m asking is what would be the best way to get a smoother finish on this scale and would it affect the value?

Thanks!

I have an XM18 3.5 vintage serie but it is with textured wood
I have no complaints about this scale

A friend have an XM24 vintage with smooth scale and just like you I am not a fan of the finish of the scale

I think the finish is god but may feel « meh » on smooth scales

Seems like they could have done a higher grit while sanding. I’m going to attempt a better finish
