Question about Individual For Sale etiquette...

While I like a good scavenger hunt as much as the next guy, some annoying trends are beginning to develop on the For Sale forum.

For one thing, it's very busy. Just as busy as the General, in my opinion. So, it's easy for a post to get buried under 20 new posts inside of a couple of hours.

This is further aggravated by the fact that some people just "BTTT" up the wazoo if they're not getting hits on their sales! I can understand the frustration of your sale getting buried and hidden in a matter of hours, but in some cases it people trying to pawn off ky-rrrap, or just asking way too much money, that's why nobody's biting.

Maybe it could be split into more specific For sale forums, divided by cost, or custom vs. production, fixed vs. folder, whatever.

BTTT = Back to the top.

As for splitting the forums, it is an option... I'll have to think about it.

Yeah, Sparkles. I think RH is onto something, here. Make four forums - production folders, production fixed-blades, custom folders, custom fixed-blades. Not too much of a hassle (like having 'custom folders with stainless blades, damascus bolsters, and wood handles', etc....), but enough separation to greatly reduce the per-forum post traffic, allowing each post to stay up longer.

I third (or fourth?) the idea of splitting-up the "Knives For Sale..." forum into four parts, or at least two...(Custom and Production). That would really help with the congestion, and maybe even some of the multi-posting I've noticed lately.

Excellent idea! Four forums: custom folder, custom fixed, production folder, production fixed. It would be self-policing, too, because a misplaced post wouldn't get any action. It would also tell you more about the demographics of the members by observing the use in each forum. Its definitely worth a try.

A seller who BTTTs just creates the impression that either there's something wrong with the knife (maybe the reason nobody's bought is because it's not actually what I think it is), something wrong with the seller (maybe the reason nobody's bought is because this guy's got a bad rep), that the knife is over-priced (if it was a good deal, someone would already have bought it) or that the seller is desperate (in which case I should low-ball him and hope for a bargain).

IMHO, BTTT no more than once per day and no more than three times total. Any more creates those bad impressions.

I like the forems. everyone should be free to express what they feel. Some things are stuiped. some things are great. It is like life. Spelling does not count.

If it will end all the ridiculous hostility people are getting towards sellers on the for sale forum, then great.

I've personally stopped selling knives here, because of all the BS, its a shame really, I would rather give some of the great people here the chance before ebay, but oh well...

FWIW, I agree that splitting the F/S forum into categories is a good idea. I also agree some folks seem to have gone BTTT crazy. I utilize it myself when something isn't selling but I do limit it to once a day. There's a character with a few knives for sale now that bumps them up every couple of hours!
