Question about Ka-Bar Dozier Folders

It a one-side thumb stud, but it's reversable. That's according to the AG Russell online catalog.

Is the "thumb notch" opening model usable? I like my Spyderco Native, and my Byrd Cara Cara, which have large roundish holes. I don't like other knives with smaller holes that aren't circular as the blade rotates open.

The Large Dozier (3.6" blade) has thumbstuds on both sides.
The regular Dozier (3" blade) has single side, but reversible.

I prefer the thumb-hole Dozier over the thumb stud models. I've never had an issue with opening holes that weren't round.

On the smaller models, both the thumb stud and the pocket clip are reversible for southpaws.

Both have been set up for a leftie on mine, this is one of the reasons I like these so much, they are one of the few knives in this price range that are fully ambidextrous.

The new larger one has dual thumb studs and a reversible clip.

I'll have to take a look at that new larger one, and the model with the thumb notch opener.

Thanks again for the info.

I have the thumb stud spear point.
I ordered the thumb notch on ebay only to be ripped off.
The spear point is a great knife, as good as it gets for the money I think.

Yes, these are clearly great knives for the money.

I like the thumb notch opener.
I'm not a big fan of single-side thumbstud openers because like being able to open my knives with either hand.
Without doing any sort of mods to the knife, even something simple like switching the thumbstud to the other side.

Couple questions..

Do the Dozier folders feel "solid"? Can they take "outdoorsy" abuse? I can't imagine one could baton or chop wood with them...But are they "solid"?

Also...Anybody have that large Dozier folder? That one really appeals to me.

My large Dozier should be arriving this afternoon via UPS, so I will try to post some pics of it this weekend.

Awesome revolver! Even a brief written review would do for me.

It looks like a great knife, I have no problem with AUS-8, I like the blade shape and size, the price can't be beat...

I just can't tell from pictures if it has that "confidence/user/take some abuse/solid/heft" quality

I'm looking forward to hearing how it feels for you. Thanks in advance!

Thanks knarfeng!

The large Dozier is today's "Knife I Wanna Buy". Yesterday...Buck Vanguard....Tomorrow...who knows?

Thanks for saving me having to Seach (and for not saying "Why don't you just use the "Seach" feature").

I'm off to your thread to read it right now!

Read it! I'm sold! Sounds like a solid do-about-anything folder at an excellent price. I may very well get one and spend the money I saved on a nice dinner.

I prefer the thumb notch (oval hole) model with its tapering blade. It allows for some fine work such as taking out steel wire strands from under the skin, prying out rubber gasket seals, makeshift hole maker, and an expedient toothpick for flicking out those annoying occassional chicken bits stuck between the teeth! BTW- the large folder mentioned is the Lockback model. It is essentially a production model of the Ti Folding Lockback made at the Dozier shop.

Here's a quick scan for size comparison.

Initial impressions; it's big and stout, snaps open with a nice loud click, feels good in the hand. It carries nice and flat in the pocket. In my hand it feels almost more like a nice sized fixed blade that folds, rather than a folder, if that makes any sense. I am not a fan of thumbstuds much, so I may just be out of practice, but I can't seem to open it fast. I can open it easily if I think about it, but I can't just fire it open like I can my Delica, Trance or Griptilian. The grind at the tip is a little uneven, but this is the case on many of the knives that I have bought this year and it should be easy enough to fix with a little work. It is plenty sharp, but the edge is a little thicker than I normally like, but again this is a pretty common thing these days. I think that it would be very interesting to see how it would cut with a Krein regrind. Overall a lot of knife for the money, and I think that it would serve most people well for a big folding hunter or utility knife.

Thanks, revolver! Hope you enjoy it!

I'm sold. I had a hankering for a fixed blade drop point hunter (Buck Vanguard), but I don't know how much I would use it.

For the price of the KaBar, even if I use it only rarely, the "cheapskate" part of my brain wont be kicking the "knife lusting" part of my brain.

Update after carrying it for a couple days:

As much as I like the ambi opening studs in concept, I am not liking the clip side stud on this thing. It catches pockets on several pants and shorts that I have carried it in, and I am debating grinding it down a lot or remove them completely (there is plenty enough blade exposed to pinch with the off hand to open).
