Question about kerambit. . .

For some reason I had never seen a kerambit before a month or two ago, and now it seems like I'm seeing them everywhere. . . Maybe because my knife fever had been in remission for a while  . . . Anyhow, most of the ones I've seen elsewhere seem to have very sharp points and are obviously fighting knives. The ones by HI that I've seen here have much broader blades and the points are more obtuse (best word I could think of). So I was wondering if these were still pretty much designed strictly as fighting knives or if anyone would consider them as being useful at all for more mundane tasks such as hiking and camping.

I'm probably going to be ordering a Bilton khukuri soon and I'm pretty sure that will suit my needs just fine. The question about the kerambit stems mostly just from curiosity.

There has been some discussion about the naming of the HI piece to which you refer. The HI Kerambit does not conform to the standard hooked bill format of other kerambits. If you do a search on the subject, you'll find the discussion.

Thanks Steve! I had some limited success with the search last night, but hadn't seen the design thread. I wish that all of the pics were still in there, but it was still a good read. I may have to get one after I get my Bilton. Or do I want to go bigger and get a Pen Knife or 12 inch AK? So many beautiful blades, so little money. . .

I have an HI kerambit with a wood handle. I didn't care for the sheath, and so had the very talented Mr. Koster make me a kydex sheath, which makes this fairly large knife very carryable.

My blade took a great edge!

At some point in the future I intend to do something with the ring... remove it or do some kind of shaping to reduce its size but keep it functional, don't know.

Andy before you start trying to modify the ring be sure and sand the finish off around the ring, especially around the top where the end grain is, and then drop super glue onto the end grain until it won't absorb any more. This will strengthen the wood and help keep the ring from chipping out while you're working on it. :D
I had to learn this the hard way.:(

I wish I could have the name changed.....:( *shrug*

It's not a kerambit and never was intended to be...somehow we got caught up in the design and failed to pick an appropriate name...:(

Hey guys,

As for the question of "Is it good for anything other than fighting" I would have to say the answer is a resounding yes!

I just recived my HI Karambit today, and let me tell you, I was amazed by the weight of the box alone. My biggest fear was that this Karambit would be dinky, and not big enough for the paws God blessed me with. No worries there!

It has good chopping power due to the weight of the knife, it is more than thick enough to pry with if needed, and would make a great knife to carry on your belt or pack for a day hike, or to take into the back country as a small camp knife!

I can't say enough of how pleased I am with this design!

Thank you guys for comming up with this, it rocks!

I think that I offically have HIKV! (tell me, they ship to Germany, right??)

Out for now,

Deuce
