Hello everyone,

This is my first time to be here. I am fans of buck knife. I have one Buckmaster 184 (1986 made), and one M9 PHIII bayonet. I have two questions about knife care. I hope anyone from this forum may give any help.

Q1, Lubricant used on blade
Currently, I'am using a kind of Gun Oil (Phillips Shot Gun Oil - special oil for metal to metal lubrication ) bought from Gun shop for my knives. I just wonder if this lubricant is OK.

Q2, How to keep the kinfe
Well, should I keep the kinfe inside sheath or store them separately.

Thanks

Neither of them are folders, are they? If they're fixed blades I don't see why lubrication would be necessary. Protecting the blades from corrosion is a valid concern, especially if they have a blasted finish. As far as storing them in the sheaths, I wouldn't worry about it. I've read that it's bad to store carbon steel knives in leather sheaths, but I've done it without a problem. As these are stainless (I believe) I don't think you'll have any problem storing them in their sheaths, especially if those sheaths are synthetic.

Thanks James,

Just like what you said, the reason to use lubrication is for protecing the blade. The blades are stainless for sure, but it also may get rusty. If you have a look on Buck knives' webpage, they have this kind of oil just for blade. So, what I want to know is can I use gun oil instead of the oil offered from Buck.

About the sheaths, you may right. I will do it in that way.

Any kind of oil will help to repel moisture. You can store both in the sheath. If they get wet while in the sheath, remove and dry both and then reapply some rust inhibitor/ oil. I have an M-9 that I keep in its sheath and no problems yet.

No matter what you use, if you use it on a fixed blade you're not using "lubrication"... ;)

You are quite right. I choose gun oil it was because I couldn't find any kind of light oil for knife blade protecting. And the gun oil could be one of the best oil I may found from my place. :)
