Question about Kydex sheaths

I know little about knives and even less about sheaths. But I had a question for kydex sheath makers, why do you use those round fasteners to attach the slabs of kydex together? It seems to make the sheath much wider than it needs to be. Is there another "fastener" one could use to make the sheath so it wouldn't be so wide? Or are those round fasteners all there is?

Well to be honest there are many fasteners you can use. I think the main reason to use those fasteners is to attach it to belt loops and gear.

Thanks, that makes sense. So, hypothetically, you can opt for smaller fasteners around the circumference of the sheath, except for maybe the bottom and top of the sheath... interesting.
