Question about Laguioles

I am in the market for a new Laguiole, I have only owned one French Laguiole, it was made by Forge De Laguiole, overall, I was very happy with it, but this was one thing that really bothered me, there was no blade stop to prevent the knife from hitting the backspring, so if I ever closed it carelessly, I would blunt the blade.

I have been really intrigued by the Laguioles made by Fontenille Pataud, so many different models and variants to choose from, I am undecided if I will go for the back-lock variant, or the more traditional slip-joint version.

But my main question is, are the Laguioles made by Fontenille Pataud similar to the other brands, in that they do not have a blade stop? Or is there a blade stop?

Are there any classic French Laguioles that have a blade stop?

Thanks so much

PS- I am very Tempted to get the one hand opening variant, but I think it's a bit much

Entering the second thousand posts...and trying to help a bit.
I've seen (handled) two Fontenille-Pataud Laguioles and found them to be great knives.
They don't have a real "kick" (I assume that's the proper name) as some American traditionals, but I'm more than sure than none of the two I've seen was hitting the backspring when closed. Hopefully, other members here will give more feedback. Great knives for sure.

Hello. I have had a couple Fontenille-Pataud Laguioles over the last couple years (9cm lockback and 2-11cm traditionals). If you look at the inside of the backspring while the knife is opened, there is a little "bump" about where the blade's "kick" would hit. It prevents the blade's edge from hitting the spring, thus becoming dull. I've really liked the one's I've had and wouldn't hesitate to get another!

Thanks so much, That pretty much answers my question, now I just need to choose a handle scale, Size, Lock etc... it's not an easy decision considering so many great options.

Yes, they've got the blade-stop. The locking versions are EXCELLENT, their lock is the backspring and it in no way impedes the action of the knife or the aesthetics. There are some video reviews of these on the forum. I can also personally vouch for first-class customer service from this artisan maker.

Thanks for the Help, I decided on the model

I am ordering a fontenille-pataud Laguiole 12cm "NATURE" , lock-back. Ram Horn Scales With Special 60Hrc hardenned RWL 34 stainless steel

I am very excited for it

Good choice! Big knife that. I've got a Ramshorn 10cm in their standard Sandvik and I'm looking at some of their other knives, the Capuchadou for instance that is sort of Flintlock pistol handle shape/ Saddlehorn. Check the Knife Reviews thread for Schmalhaus' video of this knife.

Regards, Will

I´m sure, you´ll be happy with your Laguiole. The hornscales always look good on a Laguiole. Especially because of the knife shape.

Kind regards
Andi

Funny, I have a Capuchadou on order, it should be coming sometime next week

Really? hope you can let us know more about that when you get it. I'm very taken with this pattern.

I found out about it from Schmalhaus' video, I was very taken with it, I ordered the exact same model he had, I just upgraded the steel. I will post some pics and my impressions when it arrives

I originally was going to order the capuchadou from Fontenille-Patuad but instead bought their Corsican "PIALINCU" in Horn tip instead about 3 weeks ago as shown below.

I am very happy with it; color and depth of pattern in scales is very nice.
