Question about leather wrapped

I am wanting to trying something new however I am having a difficult time finding information. I want to do a small diameter leather, epoxy soaked, leather wrap however I would like to have more circumference, width to the handle. Instead of just wrapping the leather around the tang, I was thinking that taking some shaped leather and epoxying those to the tang area would allow for a little more shape. Then I could begin the wrap over the top of my shaped leather strips.

Am I way off here? Can anyone give me any guidance?

I appreciate it.

You could wrap twine or cord of some sort over the grip first, then cover it with leather. This is common on historical leather-covered grips. The leather will take on the texture of the cord wrap if it is thin enough.

Acrid, that was my question. So apply shaped G10 scales then do my wrap over the top and epoxy soak it? I was wondering if I should use G10 or Micarta or something like leather. I'll give it a shot unless someone else wants to give me some more suggestions.

Justin, that would also look very cool. You could do a cool lace at the bottom of the leather wrap to hold it together. That's another thought.

Appreciated.

Here's a couple leather neckers I did a few months ago. Pretty simple to make. On these I add a 1/8" of leather on both sides. Then some small leather cord and then wrap with 1/16" leather that was stitched at the bottom of the tang. Each layer is Barge cemented. When I put the outer layer on after the Barge cement has dried I spray the finish side with water and then stretch the leather before I fasten it. As it drys it will shrink and form a real tight fit. After it drys out I submerge the handle in a thinned down mix of shellac.

That's what I would do, I've done G10 under cord wrap before with what I consider success.

Ray, I like those knives.
