Question about leaving an Izula in my car all the time

Hey folks,

First off, Merry Christmas! :)

I have 2 Izula's and I wondered what your thoughts were about me leaving one in my car all the time in a BOB?

Since I live in Ohio the humidity is fairly high most of the time. I wondered if it would be fine through temperature and humidity changes if I just made sure to oil up the exposed edge well. I usually just put some mineral oil on 1095 knives and leave them like that between uses. Not so much that it's dripping off but enough so you can see a wet residue on the blade.

Whatcha think?

Thanks in advance! ;)

Well, I wouldn't worry about it that much. Humid is the norm here and my group is doing just fine. Any patina or spots will be removed with use, so just keep a little nose/forehead oil on it and all will be well. Of course, tree sap, blood, oil and other coating agents work in a pinch. LOL

Wipe it with a gun & reel silicone rag before leaving it in the car.

But, it's not made of a supersteel, only 1095, so it might melt!! :p

The knife is tough as nails. I'd be worried about leaving gear in vehicles, period. I just don't do it. That's why God and Maratac invented cheap Bail Out Bags available from County-Comm. Carry it in the house, carry it out of the house, etc., etc., etc..

Agreed. Too many stories here about gear stolen from cars. It takes a few seconds to smash and grab.
That County Comm BOB is a great little organizer for basic gear, and the XL BOB is a great big organizer -- and my gear bag for walking around. MUCH safer to take it with you, especially if you like to keep valuables or especially weapons handy.

I think people forget that regular paraffin works great to protect knives and is food safe. I have no problem with keeping knives made from 1095 and 5160 and SR77 under my pillow(I live in the hood and have a small boy in my household so no firearms within easy reach) and I have never had more than a tiny bit of patina form on the edgeand I don`t oil them or anything.

IMO if you like that knife enough to swet about its appearance the I would think you liked it enough to not leave it in your vehicle.
If you do though, I'd go with the silicone wipes or a light spray.
Don't let yourself get fanatical about seeing a little rust on your knife. If it's a real user, sooner or later some is bound to show up. I personally think a well used blade shows character and reflects the outdoor spirit of its owner.
Just my 2.
Merry Christmas. ;)

I do like the knife enough to sweat about it's appearance but that's why I have two. I figured I could leave one in my car. The BOB is in my trunk so it's not like people can see it. I'm thinking maybe I should throw a Mora in the bag with a SAK instead though.

Good idea about carrying it around too. I think I'll just carry it around with me instead of leaving one in my car.

Thanks! :)

As long as it's hidden well enough to decrease the odds it will be stolen, lightly coat it with some type of oil and don't worry, it'll be fine.

I keep an rc5 in my trunk. No issues. I'd rather risk theft and have it there, than not have it when I need it.

Or put your kit bag inside of a ratty old gym bag with some "Dirty-drawers-o-flage" sticking out and no one will want to touch it.

I keep one of mine on my GHB/CERT bag in my truck all the time. Haven't had any issues with it.

I have more or less "neglected" my Izula. The only place where I have had any oxidation issues is the text on the handle- which I attribute to my excessively sweaty hands. Even the edge barely a tarnish. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Thanks for the replies folks. I have opted to just put a Mora in my bag and carry the Izula with me around all the time. ;) Eventually I'll get another Izula and and put it in my trunk in the BOB.

I like this idea - a ~$10 sitting in a bag, who cares if it hardly gets used, an Izula with you so you can use it whenever you need to. This seems much smarter than putting an expensive knife in a bag and ignoring it. The good thing is that the cheap Mora is still a capable knife so it is still worth having in that bag.

Maybe I'll make my carbon steel Mora a user and my stainless steel Mora can sit in a bug out bag.

I agree. I would do that too (regarding your Moras).
