Question about lined fixed blade sheaths .

I've never made , owned or used a lined fixed blade sheath so I have a question for those that do have some experience .
Does the exposed lining of softer leather at the opening of the sheath get damaged over time by getting nicked and cut by the blade when extracting and replacing the knife into the sheath .
Do you need to take greater care with these sheaths ?
The greater thickness and mass of the rolled over lined opening must increase the chance of accidentally stabbing / slicing the leather as you start the knife back into the sheath ?
I was asked this question recently , and had no idea of the answer .

Ken, I have seen unlined sheaths cut up pretty badly also. The fault generally lies with the user and not the sheath. The short answer to your question is yes the lining can be nicked and cut, but generally speaking a little common sense and care when inserting or extracting the knife will go a long way toward eliminating the problem. Deer skin lining is particularly vulnerable to sharp points, but again if the owner realizes this and uses a little extra care it's not a big deal.

Generally speaking if a person continually cuts a sheath, he or she could probably also break an anvil!

Thanks for the reply Paul

It's a question I've never really contemplated before because I never made fixed blade sheaths .
A guy approached me to make him a sheath and I couldn't help him out other than pass him on to someone else here in Australia .
User abilility and technique is often the cause of trouble no matter what the activity :)

Thanks again

Ken

That liner must be a hard cow leather, , not thicker than blade is.Harder liner give rezistance to keep the sheath forms in time, also the sewing line choke the leathers together and give tuffness.

Lately, i put liner also in folder sheats, its lok bether and i like the mutch tuffnes i obtain in this way.I use regulary 4-5 mm (hard)leather to knives sheats, and 3 mm leahter to folders sheats.
