I know you guys have talked about this before,I just couldn't find it.
Could someone give me the formula that they are using to make a stain-Dye from rit dye and varathane please.I am needing to stain up some curly maple and wanted to try this.
Thanks,
Bruce

Bruce; This is what I just used on some choke cherry burl with red rit. In a quart mason jar 50/50 miniwax wood hardener and acetone, then put in a hole package of rit and mix well. I kept it in the mason jar for 2 weeks.

Thanks George.
Have you tried pulling a vaccum on this and seeing how far through a handle size block of wood it will go.I am wanting to dye and stabilize the blocks and then shape them or cut them into scales later when needed.

Thats what I did also, 50 / 50 with the hardener and acetone, but I put in as much as the liquid would dissolve for dye about a 1 1/2 packs, came out nice and red.

I recently tried this, but left out the acetone and only gave it a week to soak. Didn't work. Gotta give it another shot.

Did that too. Put some birdseye maple in a jar off acetone/wood hardener with a packet of scarlet Rit dye. Came out red and the I ground and sawed the wood, I saw that the dye went all the way through. Worked great. I was setting the thong hole tube into the handle and accidentally messed it up with the hammer and split it though. :( :o

Bruce: I should have said that, I use the mason jars as a vacuum chamber and pull 24" of vacuum for 2 weeks. It does go all the way thru. I also put them in a pressure pot to dry.
