I have have an uncoated Matriarch 2 and recently noticed something that caught my attention. It doesn’t have the Emerson marks the coated blade models I’ve recently seen. Is this normal? I bought mine from BHQ, so I trust it to be the real deal, I’m just curious.

Thanks,
Lee

As you can see, it’s only sat in the box. Recently, when I decided to get it out to fidget with it, I noticed it was missing the Emerson Wave trademark. I thought all were marked. Anyone willing to clear this up for me?

Thank you in advance,

Lee

I believe the wave patent expired in 2017 (though the trademark persists), so perhaps the etch was removed as it references the patent? Sort of like Benchmade did on their knives when the Axis lock patent expired.

Thank you much, that makes sense. I felt confident it’s absolutely real, but I hadn’t realized the wave patent had expired. Not as if it hurts my feelings it’s not marked Emerson anywhere. :D

I noticed it was not on the knife on the Spyderco Website and no reference to Emerson.
Emerson now has it as a trademark (which doesn’t expire) instead of a patent.

Sal explained once how they believed they could have just used the wave anyway since their design was significantly different but decided to go the licensing route...I think that says a lot about Sal since he literally gave up money in his pocket with that choice!
