Question About Micarta

I recently purchased a Green FFFBM W/ the Green Mag micarta scales, and to my understanding the more you handle the Micarta the darker in appearance certain areas of the slabs become, due to the oils from your skin. My Battle Mistress came from the BCS with micarta slabs that that had certain areas that were so dark that they almost look black, primarily along the top and bottom edges, not so much on the sides. Does that mean that mine was handled excessivly before it made it way to me? or is Micarta by nature alot like leather...were in many cases no two or three pieces are alike(some darker some lighter)?

Also what are the durability differences between the linen micarta and canvas Micarta?

I am pretty sure that the Fat Flat FBM's come with the linen?

Thank you in advance for your time and any knowledge you can pass along

I find that the Canvas Micarta picks up moisture and oils a bit more than Linen Micarta. Paper Micarta picks up moisture even less. At least, that is my experience. In terms of the color, that seems to vary from handle to handle. Below is a photo of my three Fat FBMs with Green blades and Green Linen Micarta handles. One is dark, one is light, and the other is between.

Give it a good wash with dish soap.
They are made in a machine shop, it might be oil.
you might be surprised how it turns out...

All three are Magnum handles. I never photographed the one I have with Standard handles.

Thats what I was hoping it was, in know way shape or form am I trying to question Busse quality control, just based on what I have been told so far about Micarta, I started to ponder if the knife had been lightly used etc...

It is a very AWESOME piece of craftsmanship, and I dont think I could ever part with it, I just get a little overly anal:D

I will wash it up with some dish soap...I was also told to apply a light coating of nail polish remover to draw out any excessive oils??? and treating with a light coating of WD40???

Is there a big durability difference between the linen and canvas? or about the same...and the two just pocess different qualities.

I think the durability difference is slight..

You don't have to WD 40 the coated knives as much,
I like to blow the hair dryer on the handle to evaporate any water.
Ajax scouring powder works well on dirty micarta;)

I never would have thought of scouring powder, I would have assumed it would be much to abrassive for Micarta...but then again thats why I like to hang out here with you good folks...I learn something about something I knew nothing about.

Ok well that worked, now I really like the handles. Im thinking about keeping this one around now. Thanks for the tip.

I suspect that what you are seeing is polishing of the edges where they smoothed it out, not oils from handling.

good point...that very well could be the case, I have chose not to stress out about it too much;)

+eleventy-twelve. Exactly the reason.

What you don't wanna do is see how dark and pretty it is and start thinking of how if you polished the rest of the handle, it would look that dark and pretty all over. LOL

Wow,what if those were Jerry's oils, where he picked it up, and was 'splainin about the new changes to the next version?

Or Amy 0's, where she chose THAT knife to cut her famouts cheesecake!!

There went all that collectability value....

OH, the humanity......

But seriously, don't know if they wear gloves, but could have just been from normal production handling.
