Question about my first Emerson

I purchased my first Emerson, a CQC-11 SF, and I have a question about it. When I try and close the blade it takes what I consider a ridiculous amount of pressure to get the lock to release. Is this something that is normal with these knives? I have heard that there is a bit of a break in period with the Emerson knives and I hope that this will eventually loosen up.

Yup, just give it a while.
The locks quite often stick at first but just let all the
parts get seated in and it will be fine in no time

The Titanium liner locks stick a little at first. If it is too bad you can rub a little pencil lead on the blade where the lock contacts it to help but you will be lubricating the lock face itself so you decide if you want to use that technique.

Yes, use the pencil and, by all means, keep oil off the locking surfaces. That's likely your problem - you over oil your knife and it gets on the locking parts.

Sounds counter-intuitive, but oil will make a lock stick every time.

.

My CQC13 stuck like that. Then a colleague in the office asked to have a look at it and of course the first thing he did was to flick the blade out (non-knife people cannot resist doing this).

I almost kicked him in the nads for abusing one of my favourite knives but ever since then its been a lot easier to unlock.

They will all loosen over time though. Better that the tolerances are too tight rather than too loose!

flicking isnt any harder on 'em than waving imho, i wouldnt get obssesive/compulsive about it but an occasional flick or wave shouldnt hurt anything, it is harder on 'em than a std opening though.

Yes, let break In. One thing to do Also is:- TAKE PENCIL AND SCRATCH LEAD ONTO PLACE WHERE BLADE MEET LOCK. DO THIS WHEN KNIFE IS IN CLOSED POSITION. THE LEAD FROM PENCIL WILL MAKE IT SMOOTH, WITHOUT ATTRACTING DUST/OTHER DIRT.

Do not Be scared to Flick/Wave knife. it will take everything you throw at it. and get New Liners if something goes wrong. Bad to Flick very hard on Lock back knife, but Emerson Back stop is 1 solid peice of Titanuim, will NOT Matter how hard you Flick. If you Flick and Lock Moves Liner need replacement anyway. It should never go past a certain point no matter how many time "Flicked/Waved" hard. if so, Bad Lock on Overpriced Knife IMHO. and I must also be Honest-

Dear Mr. Emerson, Whats the Point of Using 154CM ( Great Steel) But only making it 57RC? It is a folding Self defense knife. NOT a Big Chopping knife that needs to be soft.
I Buy water jugs, so I pierce it to allow water to flow. Just doing 1 peircing of jug with Brand new CQC-15 completely folded over the edge!!! What is this?? a Cheap 420 19.99 CRKT knife don't even do that. So I ask why not make steel that supposed to be hard(154CM) to it's Full potential? make 60-62. I am Truly Disappointed in this knife. I Love the design and How it works, But Need to Improve the Liners and the steel hardness if want to sell for $200 range!!! I guess good Website and Guru Martial Arts status mean you can make knife however you want and people still buy?
So I do not do this anymore. I, instead of buying 1 emerson then 1 spyderco on and on, I save Money and Buy true "TOUGH" Knife Like Rick Hinderer. STRIDER SMF. So Mr. Emerson can you explain to me how My CQC-15 "Hard use Knife" front edge completely folded over from piercing 1 Jug? Did I get a "DUD" if os, How Many "DUDs" in 1 Batch of knives??? I have SMF for 4 years. Use every day, Only Sharpen 1 Time in 4 YEARS!!! Just Got Rick Hinderer XM18. I Think Just as tough as SMF But Lighter and nicer looking.
That Is falling off topic though. Why Did My "Hard Use Knife" entire front edge roll over and become essentially worthless just by peircing water jug 1 time? can you ansewer this Mr. Emerson?

Its most unlikely Mr. Emerson is going to answer your "question" him self as EKI dont really get involved here.

I cant answer any questions for EKI but I can tell you my personal experiences with the knives has been different from yours.
I have carried Emersons for a number of years both at work and home.
I used to work as a chainsaw operator and gave my knives some good hard use over the years on that job.
I have never had anything I would call a problem with the steel used or the hardnes of it.

I can only presume 57Rc (+) is used to keep the steel at a level where ease of sharpening and edge retention reach some sort of equilibrium.
If it was much harder you may see the edge chipping with the steel being more brittle and it would probably be harder to sharpen quickly in the field,
if it was any softer you would defo see poor edge retention and rolling edges etc.

i agree with haze, i have never once thought "gee 154 sucks i wish it was S30V or something".

& the odds or ernie posting on this are between "slim" and "none" lol i dont recall him ever posting on this forum other than to post info on sales and items for sale, never ever even once to answer a question.
