Question about my first Sebenza

I just opened up my first Sebenza, an Insingo!

Quick couple questions:
Did anyone else have to sharpen their knife right out of the box? Mine won't cut arm hair or phone book paper against the grain. Little disappointed.

Also will the ease of opening get better as I break in the knife? I'm struggling to open it with just my thumb right now.

Thanks for the help and pics to follow.

Congrats on your purchase.
Opening - You should do a search on this there are tons of posts and are very helpful. Push lug sideways.
Sharpening- They usually come fairly sharp. Get a Sharpmaker it's easy to use.

Love the Insingo.

Thank you. I ran it across the strop and it seems to have shaped it up quickly. Just didn't figure I'd have to do so out of box.
When I get to my laptop (on my phone right now) I'll look up more on the opening of it. The advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm on my 3rd Sebenza now and I had to sharpen my very first, right out of the box. Like you said, no shaving, no paper slicing. A dull edge can happen with any manufacturer, it is what it is. My other 2 came very sharp. The Sebenzas I have experienced do tend to have a strong detent but, and it will get easier with time. I'd push outwards like gull wing said, that will make it way easier to open.

Congrats on an excellent knife purchase, and may you obtain several more over the course of many years! Enjoy in good health!

The knife will break in nicely, and smooth out A LOT. When I got my Sebenza I was a bit underwhelmed by how "tight" it felt, but it worked itself in after about a week, and is now buttery smooth.

My Insingo came sharp, so that is a little frustrating for you I am never happy when I have to sharpen a new knife, that aside, it was just as hard to open. They do have a very strong detent but that well ease up a little over time. Once you get past the detent and after a couple of weeks of opening and closing, you will find it to be very smooth. Like others mentioned the technique of an outward sweep works the best to open a Sebenza.

I sharpen most of my knives straight out of the box, but mainly because I have never been satisfied with a factory edge since I learned how to sharpen so it is no big deal for me.

Once you get the opening sorted it will smooth out. My Insingo is mirror polished under the washers at this stage from 4 years of use and if I push the lockbar far enough so that the stop pin does not create any friction the blade just falls smoothly.

You can see it in this video.

Also, be aware of where your fingers are when opening, so you're not putting more pressure on the lock bar.
