Question about my Kershaw Leek

I received my Leek in its package today and opened it up. The first thing I noticed was when I tried to deploy the blade with the flipper, it wouldn't FULLY deploy without some extra force. Is Kershaw's speed-assist only partial assistance? Maybe I'm just used to how SOG's assisted blades deploy.

Try just playing with it for a while. It should break in and work just fine. If after 50 or so flips it does not open smooth and completely try adjusting the pivot. If it is still stiff just send it back to Kershaw they will make it right.

Might wanna post in the kershaw/zt forum. An actual Kershaw employee is the mod.

My best guess is that either the torsion bar (spring) is somehow weak; or that the pivot screw is too tight.

Grab a set of mini torx screwdrivers and loosen the pivot screw just a hair and see if that helps. If it's still not right, disassemble (it's not hard) and check the torsion bar/reassemble (search the tube for how to videos if you like).

Of course the trump card on any KAI products is to send it to Kershaw and they'll either fix or replace it. But they'll also send you spare springs and such small parts to fix minor issues yourself.

I truly hope that your pivot is too tight, and that you'll be enjoying your new knife in no time.

Good luck; I hope this helped.

I think that the Leeks sold in blister packs that have the blade open don't have this problem. Anybody else notice this?

I got my first leek out of a box that had been stored/unopened for 4 years. The leek was 4 years old, packaged in an unopened box, with the knife closed inside. To this day it is the only speedsafe knife I've not had to replace the torsion bar on; and it worked perfectly from day 1.

Just my experience; sometimes life is stranger than fiction.

I think that the torsion bar sitting in the closed (or open) position for a long time is not a good thing. Use it or loose it.

Springs are primarily worn out by cycling, though sitting compressed will wear a spring a little more than one with no stress.
