Okay so I have a 3 blade Winchester I got from grandpa as my first knife and I just brought it out of retirement only I am no longer that same naive 8 year old boy
So my question is the steel entirely useless the Winchester blades have?

Thanks,
Colton

I dunno. How long has it been since you were 8? (How long ago did you get it?)

AFAIK, Winchester never made any knives in house. They were subbed out. Some of the new ones may not be as well made. But, I have a nice Winchester which was made in the 80's and it is quite nice with good carbon steel blades.

regardless of what steel it is, is should be enough for most day to day tasks
unless your job/lifestyle is a seriously hard use kind of life

but i cant imagine it wouldnt work for you though

I'm almost 18 so about 10 years ago I can't even find the knife on google haha I sharpened it up a bit and it slices paper decently

Yeah I have other better knives but I was just wondering since it was my first knife and all and given to me by my grandpa thought I should start taking care of it and give it to my future kid as his first knife

Colton, A lot of knives have been marked Winchester and the quality varies greatly depending on who made the knife. Do you have photos?

I have some photos taken from my iPhone if I can get them uploaded to my computer I would post it. I know how they how are made by other people and sorry for being vague on it but I just don't know much about it myself. So I'll try to get some pics as soon as I can

No need to upload them to your computer first. You can upload them straight to Photobucket Mobile, then post the links to them here.

Nevertheless, I don't think it really matters whether this particular Winchester is a "good one" or a "bad one." It has sentimental value, and therefore, it is a good one. Keep it, even if you don't use it much.

I'm 35 now and just had my first kid, and I sitll have my first couple knives that my grandpa gave me. Both of them are Imperials, and not of very high quality. Nevertheless, they are worth more to me than any other knives that I have. I'm lucky enough to still have my grandpa with me; he's 92 this year. But when he is gone, I'm sure they'll be worth even more to me.

Keep the knife and don't worry about it. Carry it and use it as a regular old pocket knife sometimes. Keep it sharp and oiled, as your granddad would.

Thanks man that's exactly what I'll do I'll just use it a little and always have that as a part of my grandpa when he is gone

Here is the pics anyway !

Colton- no doubt someone will come along and give you more info on the knife. But you didn't say; did he give this to you new, meaning it would be 10 years old, or was it passed down to you from his collection, which would make it anyone's guess at its age?

Regardless, if my grandfather had given me a knife, I would have loved it no matter what it was. My father did give me my first knife, and I have it today, 50+ years later! Dad wanted me to have a knife to use for all the things a guy needs to do; make kindling, whittle my first pinewood derby car, carve you name on stuff, learn to sharpen, use on camping trips and all other kinds of things a guy needs a knife for when he gets his first. So it is possible to hang onto them if you try.

I have waaaaay to many knives now (although not near as many as most here!!) and some were pretty costly to me. But the old knives that belonged to my Dad and Grandfather are my most prized. My first knife and a couple of others actually come in second.

I wouldn't care what anyone told me about your knife. I would use it well for a few years, and then work it into the daily rotation with new aquisitions. At some point, I would start thinking of handing it down, but no doubt your grandfather thought you "needed" that, so you should use it and put your own imprint on the knife. It will make it all the more valuable to the person that receives it later on in life.

Just my 0.02...

Robert

I agree. Your grandfather gave it to you therefore it is valuable in asense that goes beyond money.I'm 47 and the grandparents are long gone.
I have two old small penknives that belonged to one of my grandfathers-they are fully stashed with the other grandfathers ww2

True I have a load of his old tools -chisels and stuff. Penknives are more special.
photos would be good -we like to look at knives with history.

The medals and penknife are something from each of the old boys. They are fully stashed and treasured.
If your Grandfather gave it to you its valuable in a way that goes beyond money. The first klnife my Dad gave me was a cheapo SAK knockoff. The sheath I had made for it is worth more. Although the knife fell apart like 30years ago or something I have a decent SAK replacement.
cheers

sorry -not sure what happened there!?

Camillus was one of the folks that made knives for Winchester. Your knife looks to be in very good shape.

Looks like a goodie to me. Nothing wrong with that knife at all. Sounds like you have a really great grandfather :)

Yeah he bought it new and he is always giving me family heirlooms just a couple months ago he gave me a nearly 100 year old double barrel shotgun has a great story and still takes doves down quite well

Lucky you! And it sounds like you appreciate it, too. I never had any time with my grandfathers or one of my grandmothers. Both grandfathers died when I was about 4, and one of my grandmothers died well before I was born.

Enjoy 'em while you got 'em!

Robert
