Question about my Manix

Had some side to side and vertical blade play with my Manix, contacted Spyderco, and was sent a pivot pin assembly, thanks again  . Finally found a torx bit set so that I can replace the pin assembly, and after all is said and done, no more side to side play, but enough vertical play to notice it. This is my only real heavy duty knife, I use this one a good deal. This is grating on my ADD, but I'm also afraid something might happen while using it. Any suggestions?

For the record, I considered it a great feat that I could reassemble the knife. :o

For what is worth, Spyderco (Sal and Taz) have both stated several times on this forum and their home forum that a bit of vertical blade play is normal and even preferable in a lockback....I'm sure those more versed in this stuff can better explain.

I know I've read that (here) repeatedly, but all the Delicas I have (they're the only lockbacks I own) whether they are the plastic clip models or the metal clips with the Boye detent, do not have any vertical blade play.

I don't know if I really buy into the explanation that lockbacks should be expected to have some vertical play. Why would some not have any, and others "have to" have some to work right?

I don't know...why would Spyderco say it if it wasn't so though?

I work in QC. Throwing product away for what the manufacturer considers a minor defect is frowned upon. By allowing for some blade play they throw away less product and can sell their knives to us at a lower cost.

the only 2 spyderco knives i own are lock backs (assist I & II) and they are very solid, no vertical play with either of them. to be honest i was quite suprised by how stout these lightweight knives are.

unfortunatly it sounds like your manix needs a trip to colorado for a tune up.

Sal, is this play normal, or should I send it in?
If they see this request, they will say exactly what I said earlier, then they will say it is impossible to make a judgement without actually holding the knife. If it is a concern, go ahead and send it in. If nothing else it gets a nice treatment in the Spydie Spa, and a thorough rechecking over.

SHS .. Why agonize over this? Just send it in and have the Spydie folks check it over.

I don't want to waste their time unnecessarily if its not a real problem. But, thats what their there for, so I will send it in. Maybe they can send it back to me with a note telling me I'm insane.

Finally sending it in today, leave its fate up to the Spyder gods. They've taken great care of me in regards to another knife.
