Question about my new Emerson

I just received my CQC-7V from EKI, beautiful and sharp! I had them tap and drill it for lefty carry, and replace all the black hardware with satin. Unfortunately the spacers came in black only, but I like the way it turned out. My question is regarding how tight the pivot screw is. Very hard to open as it came from the factory, but if I loosen the pivot screw, the blade is no longer centered. Would appreciate any advice from you more experienced Emerson owners. BTW lock up is between 20-40% depending on how hard it is opened.

Sounds like you have a great specimen all ready to be broken in.
Many will weigh in with some great advice, but what I like to do is get that pivot to just where the blade is centered or not playing, then just start with the opening and closing. Don't have to open to lock, or close all the way, just get that blade moving.
The washers are self lubing, so they will get smoother. With my last Emerson (Horseman) I played around for a good month, working that existing lube in very gritty but it serves as a good break in. After that, I took the blade out, cleaned and put a small amount of blue lube on all sides of the washers. Still breaking in but getting smoother.
After around 6 months and a bit of pivot screw adjustment, she opens with just a flick of the thumb.
Cheers

First, congrats. CQC 7 with spacers sounds awesome!

Secondly, stuck in traffic? Watching t.v.? Reading a book? Open and close your new Emerson. She'll break in before you know it and will be smooth as butter:thumbup:

If you still have a centering issue after breaking in and adjusting the pivot, carefully adjust the detent on the non-lock side.

Open and close it 300x and then take apart and clean all that grit that comes from the factory and add a small amount of grease* (I think they leave that stuff in there just to polish the internals) . The opening and closing with the metal grit in helps polish the internals.

After assembly you will be scocked how smooth and easy it is.

*my preference to add grease because I think it smooths out even more so with a little grease.

Lubrication is not necessary, the washers are made of a dry lubricant as it is. Adding lube = more crap to get caught in the action. I run all my folders dry, and I have no issues at all.

Ya the washers don't require lube. But adding a drop to each detent ball can really smooth things out.

Yes I agree the washers don't need lube. But with 12 emersons I currently own the ones I added grease work better still. I even removed the grease and they don't work as well . so I put the grease back in.

Is it neccessry, no. But neither is cleaning the knife if you don't mind the gritty feel.

If you read my post I mentioned it was "my preference" to add grease. I even noted it with an asterisk so people could see it!

The reason the pivot screw is hard to turn is the locktight. When I take mine apart I see that it sometimes gets on the internals and makes the blade sticky as well. So part of the cleaning is that.

You can always buff the black coating off of those standoffs and shine them up. Also, I generally replace the .032 nylotron washers with 2x .016 bronze phosphor washers on each side. Seems to break in quicker. That's 1/4" ID and 1/2" OD. The lock side nylotrons actually have a smaller OD on some knive, but the 1/2" will work.

Use it, use it and use it some more. If it doesn't smooth out, use it again. The Nylatron washers work just fine when broken in. That said, I cheat and use Blue Lube after the knife has been broken in.

I really hate car analogies. So you know what's comin' next.

I drive a Ford Escape. My wife drives a Jeep Wrangler. I think of my Emersons as the Jeeps in my knife family. They're rough, they bounce over things that my Ford glides over, and they make you work a bit to accomplish the same things the Escape does easily. But, like that red Wranger, they're unstoppable. They'll do what they're supposed to do come hell or high water.

So I'll give you the same advice that cevtv, Rev, and A.P.F. have. Just use it. Chances are, it'll never let you down... ever! If the blade is centered and the lockup is solid... just use it. That's what it wants.

You can take it apart and tinker with the pivot until you hit a sweet spot of smooth, solid lock up, and centered. However the easiest way to achieve smooth opening and closing is to just keep opening and closing it:thumbup:
