Question about my new pocket knife

I own a SOG Twitch 11 pocket knife but since it was so expensive I bought a cheaper pocket knife today . I would be afraid to use the SOG in case I damaged it, so I wanted a cheaper knife to use instead if the need arose. Well I purchased a Gerber Traverse knife for half the price that the SOG was .This knife has to be opened manually instead of having a spring assisted opening like the SOG has. Anyways lets get to my question finally .So the knife was in my pocket and it was setting off the alarms in some of the stores in the mall . That's another interesting thing , why did the alarm go off in some of the stores and not in the other ones , even the one's that had alarms ? If the pocket knife had a plastic case instead of a metal one would the alarms have still gone off ? It was a little embarrassing to say the least .

So what about the rest of you that carry their pocket knife with you , does it set off the alarm in the stores ?

I don't have that knife but I've never had an alarm go off...That's a deal breaker.

Perhaps there is a rfid tag under the scales. That's the best I can come up with. Maybe when you bought the knife it wasn't properly passed over the device that disables the rfid tag. Just take it to a store and ask them to pass the knife over the "disabler" hehehe...if there is a beep you know there is one in the knife and probably under the scale where it would never be seen.
Tell us about it if you try this. I'm curious.
None of the knives I carry set off alarms...except when my wife sees a new one in the mail hehehe.

I don't mean to come across as insulting, but your solution was to buy another knife? I'd say use your SOG and enjoy it. I'd suggest that you save up over a few months and buy an even more expensive knife than the SOG.

But yeah, maybe there's a hidden RFID tag somewhere on the knife. I've never seen that before, but I wouldn't be surprised.

That's not so expensive for a knife. Use it. Otherwise, why even have it? Set a new standard. I only baby knives over $150....til I break them in anyway. And I am by no means a rich man, haha.

I dont see why you guys are putting own the price of his sog?

Maybe thats alot to him for a knife, not everyone would justify spending hundreds on knives and to some people 50-60 bucks is alot to put out on a knife.
Anyway it isnt the quantity spent its what the knife means to the person.
If his knife is important to him and he doesnt want to ruin it then there is nothing wrong with that.

Still, knives are tools they are meant to be used. Enjoy the knife and use it until you can't.
The Twitch 2 is an okay knife and makes a sweet little user.
Eventually you'll end up with a more expensive knife.
Putting a knife through it's paces is one of the best parts Pete. In my opinion.
I used to not use mine either. Now it doesn't matter how expensive it is. I use it.
Current EDC:
ZT 0560
Spyderco "R" Nishijin Sprint
Old Cross Victorinox Silver Alox Electrician

Life's too short to worry about it! Use it and enjoy it. =]

maybe he has new stuff syndrome, its new i cant use it, i get like that with stuff, the 1st week i was scared to use the internet on my new smartphone lol.

I've never had that happen.
Before I got really into knives, I used to carry Gerbers all the time.
Never once set off an alarm

I think the issue is unless you;re a collector, the only reason to buy a knife is to use it. And the reason to buy a better knife is so it works better when you use it... So to buy a decent knife and then not use it is ... welll... not the point... And to then buy a less good knife makes even less sense.

I'm at the buying and carrying customs and using them... Not abusing them... I carry a crap knife well decent multi-tool to abuse. :)

Oh and the only thing that would set alarms off is an RFID tag somewhere... Being metal won't in any way do it... Not possible.

I had Twitch 2. They nice edc knives. I gave it to my youngest son. It has since dissappeared in the bottomless pit we call his room.lol I agree with what has been said earlier. Knives are tools. Use them and enjoy them. I dont baby any of my knives. I take good care of them. But they get used, even the more expensive ones. Enjoy them. Thats what makes our knife hobby fun to me, using nice knives.

I never had one set off the rfid detectors at a store though. If yours is doing that you may need to check it out and deactivate it or remove it.

Some Flash 2s(not sold in a clam pack) have an RFID chip imbedded in the non lock side handle slab. It is a rectangular black plastic chip that is glued in. Look inside the knife, if you see a rectangular object imbedded in the handle(if no chip is present, you'll see the cutout for it), pry it out with a small screwdriver or pick.

Edit...I mentioned the Flash 2 because it's the only SOG folder I've had recent experience with.

I know that some of you are curious about what was setting off the alarms in the stores , so that is why I am posting this update on this subject . I was getting ready to go back to the store ( same store but at a closer location to where I live ) so I got the box out that it came in ,to put the pocket knife back in there ,for its return journey . Well lo and behold what do I see attached inside the box ? The RFID chip that was setting off the alarm probably in the stores . So it was the RFID chip inside the box that was setting it off and NOT the knife after all . I thought that those alarms were metal detectors and the metal was causing the alarm to go off but I was wrong and now I don't have to be worried about being embarrassed in stores if I carry it on me . So that's about it lol .

Good to hear you figured it out. I hate accidentally tripping those alarms. Usually happens to me when I'm walking into a store and the cashier at the last store missed the tag or something like that. It's never been a big deal, but embarrassing none the less.

So you were carrying the knife with the box? And inside your pocket?

Yes, let me explain why . I just purchased the knife in a auto, sporting, hardware store called "Canadian Tire" . I put the box in my pocket and went to visit another Mall and that's where the alarms were going off . I didn't have time yet to take it out of the box because I didn't go home yet . I hope that you didn't think that I walk around carrying the box with the pocket knife , lol ?

What else was I supposed to think? After all, you didn't mention that you tripped alarms after you just bought it. You did mention this

The rest of us don't usually carry knives in boxes in our pockets. ;)

After that statement, I just assumed that you were carrying your knife like the "rest of us". :D

At this point I didn't know yet that the box was tripping off the alarm and not the knife itself . I was thinking that maybe the alarm was a metal detector and that the metal was tripping it off . That's why I asked if anyone else experienced this who are carrying their pocket knife with them . The store alarms are activated by the security tag on the items and not by the metal but for sure at an airport there would be trouble. There it is a metal detector that they use and the metal in the knife would activate an alarm.
