question about my slanted ricasso

Hi this is DaQo'tah

Well today I finished most of the sanding on a practice 5160 knife blade.
I have on order with Rex Walter a blank of 52100 steel but felt as I wait for Rex to finish forgeing down the 6-inch bar that he uses that I should keep working on my ability to make a knife with the 5160 steel.

I have always liked the way some hunting knives seem to have the guard slanting forward it kind of makes them look fast so I wish to make my knife with this type of slanted guard also.

The trouble is that up to now all by brass guards are always flat up and down they never slant. I made them straight up and down because that was easy for me to do with my drill press. I just laid the brass into the drill press vice and drilled away.

But Im not sure how to drill out the brass when I make this type of slanted guard. It appears to me that I need to somehow match the slant of the ricasso as I clamp the ¾ inch brass into my drill press vice.

Am I correct about this trick

The knife is shown at

I can't speak for your personal drill press, but the table on mine allows it to be tilted(even has little scale on back to show how far over in degrees). Least, think tha'ts what it does, never actually used it. :)

You could also, if you have mitre box, whip up a wood(for single use) or micarta for longer use, wedge to hole the brass at an angle. Just drill hole through where drill bit will ened clearance.

hi this is DaQo'tah

you know.....I've never looked at that part of my drill press ...I bet it does have a thingy to make it tilt...

I'm still not sure how I match the angle of the ricasso, but if I could, then I could easly drill the brass guard with the tilted drill press table.
