I was perusing through my kitchen cabinet and in the back I saw this bottle. i had completely forgotten all about it for the past two years. I started to check it out an looked at the bottom. It says no hot liquids. How in the world can this bottle be thrown in the fire to boil water if I can't even put hot liquids in it? Is the quality of stainless inferior? I was under the impression this was the bottle to get couple of years ago.
Are there better bottles to be had out there now? Maybe switch to Ti?

It most likely has a double wall with an air space in the middle, a plastic interior coating or both. I note that the bottle has plastic fittings on top as well.

Actually Id think probably not a double wall and if you put hot liquids into it the heat just gets transferred to the steel which then gets transferred to your fingers and hands when you grab it. Ouch!!

Betting the warning is primarily about burning yourself. I recall the Guyot bottles being single wall and popular for boiling over a fire, but if you put your coffee in there in the morning put on a glove before grabbing it.

Ask me how I know a single wall Kleen Kanteen gets hot when you steep your tea in one.

well I would't touch it for obvious reasons if and when boiling water. Heck, its cold as all get out when putting water in it.

you can tell by touch if it is a double wall
Feel with two fingers for thickness

I have not heard that they made a double wall canteen, and if they did it would be made for insulation and hot water

It is 'standard' practice to use a single skin SS canteen to heat it in the fire with water (*never empty*)
Standard practice as taught by Dave Canterbury
(nothijng that I would want to do with my canteen!!!!)

They say that so you don't burn your hands. The bottle will get as hot as the liquid inside, unlike the double walled bottles that are designed for hot liquids.
It will be fine in the fire.

Exactly what it is. I have one, it's single walled, good for boiling, but not to put hot water in and grab onto.
