Question about my ZT 0900

Folks,

I have a question regarding the blade on my ZT 0900. This is my first ZT knife and I like it very much. I have smaller hands and this knife fits great. Anyway, the blade has an unusual looking spot near the serial number and close to the detent hole.

Can anyone tell me what this may be. At first I thought it was oil or grease but I cannot rub it away.
Here's a picture. Thanks for your replies, much appreciated!

Hmmm...that does not look right. None of my past or current ZT knives has had anything like that. I don't know what it is but it should not be there.

Any chance this a fake? Did you get it from a large online auction site?

Assuming this was a new purchase from a reputable dealer I would contact them.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply. I bought the knife from Knifeworks back in March. The spot appeared several weeks after I received it but really has not changed much in size or appearance. There's nothing that I can feel with my fingernail. I may be wrong but it appears to be right under or in the same area as the steel insert on the lockbar when the knife is closed. Perhaps the insert is discoloring the blade somehow? It seems to be more of a cosmetic issue but I wanted to see if anyone else has had this on their ZT 0900.

Thanks,
Mark

I would have thought you would get more feedback on this. Maybe the general knife section would get more.

So if I understand...this spot was not on the knife when you got it but appeared later? That's intriguing. I am not a metallurgist so don't know all the properties of S36VN, but from my chart it should NOT have this feature. Could be a flaw at the production heat/treat stage.

Have you checked with Knifeworks? Have you used the knife and exposed it to anything that could cause this?

To answer your basic question, I've had a number of ZT and other knives with S35VN and seen this.

Hi Mike,

The spot was not on the knife when I received it from Knifeworks but appeared several weeks later. I use the knife for very mundane tasks such as opening/cutting boxes, cutting tape, mainly office type stuff. Since it has been used I don't feel right contacting Knifeworks and asking them to accept it as a return. I may send it in to ZT for their examination if it gets worse (larger, changes color, etc)

Mainly my post was for curiosity sakes, since it is my first ZT.

Thanks for your replies.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I'm not planning on selling or trading it, so if it gets worse I'll send it in to ZT for a checkup.

So i read your post and my 0450 actually has something very similar in almost the exact same spot. I think that it is some discoloration due to the heat treating. This would make sense as the 0900 and 0450 are of the same "series" of new value flippers with the same S35VN steel.

Thanks for the reply! It's interesting to learn that another ZT customer has a similar 'discoloration' anomaly but on another model.
