At an auction a few years back I had purchased a box lot that contained what appeared to some type of harness leather, heavy chaps etc.. Had a definite horse odor. Anyway the leather was black and had to be 8-9 oz at least. I have made several sheaths from this material and I hope someone can tell me what type it may be? So far carbon knives after at least 3 years have not rusted in the least, and I never treated the leather, inside or out. I can add a pic of the leather, whats left of it if that would help. BUt it has an oily feel, not slick.

Hard to say what you have? Probably cow hide though, but I could be wrong.....

Hey as long as it works for you - well if it's not broke, don't fix it.....:D:thumbup:

I personally have not used horse hide - I need to try some I guess?:) I've heard that it's good stuff?

I'm sure there is a difference in the two?

I'd say it's surely cowhide, I think it may be some type of harness leather because it looks like a part of something to go over the withers of a horse. The aroma is from being on the horse. I have a western saddle and the portion that would make contact with the horse would be covered by the blanket and the wool lining of the saddle. So this came in close contact to have this aroma. Maybe it was never cleaned, I do'nt know. Could be from and old saddle I guess, where the stirrups are. Nothing of the complete piece was there, just two large flaps about 2 feet long and a foot wide at the widest. If you think of saddle bags without the pouches thats the best way to give an idea of what it looks like. Are saddle bags made with 8-9 oz leather?
