Question about old Peanuts

Hi,

The thread about grail knives got me to thinking about my grail knife, a Camillus #21.

I've noticed while trawling action sites for such slippies, that they tend to be far and few between. No matter what brand. The only one I can find consistently is the Schrade 120OT. Why is that?

They made lots of them. Heck, cutlers STILL make lots of them. Camillus made the #21 for well over 30 years. So it wasn't like they weren't popular. What happened to all of them?

Thanks!

This.
They might have been so popular, people are keeping them.

I'm thinking this may very well be true. The kind of little pocket knife a man buys and uses untill its a folding toothpick.

My thinking is that in the case of some of the original purchasers of some of the larger patterns that either the knife is a) purchased out of need for only occasional usage or b) bought for curiosity's sake and then found to be too heavy/bulky for edc. In either of these cases, I can see the knife in question being relegated to the ole cigar box or drawer in favor of something along the lines of a peanut. Well, it's a plausible theory at least.;)

The number of older (15-20 year old) Camillus knives on the Ebay market dried up soon after they closed. Even the older patterns. I think part of the reason is the hoardage factor too.

I think your theory may hold some water. I've very often mused over this myself.

There's an antique mall near me, and sometimes I browse through looking for old pipes that some widow may have got rid of. I see some old pocket knives now and then, and they fall into one of two classes. The first is a full size knife like a stockman or large jack, in pretty decent condition, with almost full blades and no visable damage, and selling for what I call an ridiculous price. Then there are the little two blade jacks and pen knives in the 3 inch range, that are in terrible shape. Blades sharpened down to toothpicks, handles cracked or even scales missing. Basicly, all used up by somebody who got thier moneys worth out of it.

You may be more right than you know, JAB.

dalee, email me your address and I'll send you this one. There's a tiny bit of shrinkage in the back scale, but the blades are full and it looks like it tells a story.

Hi,

Whew! between my 18 month old Grandson, a tractor, a lawnmower and two different call outs for weather watch, It's been a long couple of days! I every time I've sat down to reply I've gotten typus interruptuis.:D

I had not considered the hording angle. People will latch on to the oddest things I guess. I would think that people who bought, like at the Camillus plant close, for the chance at turning a profit aren't going to make one if they don't sell any.

It's very possible that the majority of them are in the hands of people who use them every day. That little yellow one I just got, (and I received a another I won just like it yesterday), is really a fine companion for my pocket. But, I see old, worn, bent and busted knives of other patterns regularly for sale. But perhaps Peanuts really do get used until they disappear.

That's a nice #21 Navihawk! I've got it's brother here with me. I think the scales look like a jigged hard plastic under a 10x loop to me. I've also noticed the pivot bolsters are a bit more square and angular than the rest of #21's and #22's I've seen. I thank you for your offer, but I will turn it down with gratitude. I do like the idea that somebody else is caring for one like mine!

I've been wondering since I stumbled in here. About the direction I might decide to collect in. Rather than just vaguely accumulate. I think I've found it. I think I will be a Peanut hunter.:)
