I live in new jersey, and my grandfather passed away and left me a gun. Do i need a permit to own it or do i have to register it? Is getting a permit needed only if i want to buy a new gun? also if i want to take it to the range can i put it in my car and go or do i need a liscense to own it? Im so confused:eek: thanks for any help. p.s one is a rifle and one is a handgun if it matters. Thanks guys.

I'm curious, would you toddle on down to the police station and register the guns if state law required it? Anyway, it doesn't look like it does. Those guns are off the grid, keep them that way...

you probably need a permit..and yes u def need to register it onto ur name...u can call ur PD and ask for them forms...but then again..off the grid is off the grid but that could lead to trouble some day...u do what u feel is correct...

After reading on NJ laws, I am just glad I live down South!

If your Dad or Grandad gives you a gun, you shouldn't have to do anything to legally keep it.
