question about paid memberships

Lets say I decide to plop down the $10 for a basic membership. A month goes by, maybe even 6 months and I decide I want to go gold. Is the initial $10 applied towards the gold membership?

Sorry if there is a special section for this. I browsed the forums but didn't see a section for this type of question.
