question about parole officers

We came home the other day and there was a card for a local parole officer inserted in our door. I suppose I should mention we've never been even arrested.

Anyway the wife was freaked a bit so I called and left a message, haven't gotten a call back. I'm assuming it's either 1) mistake 2) wants to ask us something 3) Something to do with the public safety meetings I attend. (I think this officer was there)

Any ideas?

You could have a parolee in the area and he's doing background/information gathering from neighbors.

Hmm, OK good to know. That could be it as there has been a new family move in around the corner and down the block a bit.

parole officers in ca, for example, do not engage in general law enforcement. they enforce restrictions placed on an individual by a judge.

parole is essentially an early release from state prison with restrictions limiting their behavior.

probation, on the other hand, is either an extension of custody in the community, or in lieu of detention. similar conditions are in place, however how one gets probation is different than how one is placed on parole.

parole officers may "arrest" a parolee if they violate their conditions, and there is a penal code section for a parole violation under which the parolee may be booked. however, an arrest of a non-parolee is essentially a citizen's arrest, and very uncommon.

id guess they are notifying you of a parolee in your area, perhaps a sex offender. or you have been listed as some sort of reference by someone applying for a job wth the agency.

I'mma dumbass the card says probation officer. Thanks for the info. Sex offenders?

I just looked it up 53 level 2 and 12 level 3 in our city.

Our Sheriff puts out a newspaper insert every year listing all sex offenders/predators in the county. It lists their address and offenses.

Thumbing through it last month was looking through my high school yearbook. Lots of familiar faces.

for most people, you included, the difference between a probation and parole officer is somewhat meaningless.

they do a very similar job, for very similar people.

the only reasons i can think of for a p.o. to come to your house would be a registered sex offender or a background interview. though i guess it could be related to someone you work with, a family member, etc.

do you live near a school? within 1/4 mile? if so, that likely rules out the sex offender.

He could be checking up on one of his 'clients', maybe someone you know at work or church.

They prolly just wanna verify something involving one of their cases and ask you a couple of Qs, no big thing really.

hi, i'm a parole officer :)

i was going to say it was a mistake. we usually leave cards if we do a home visit and it turns up negative (neither the parolee or 'other' are home).

another case would be that someone in prison gave your address as a potential address to be released to. some guys just get desperate and give people they barely know. we do a home visit, you say 'no way' and it's the last you hear of us.

here in NY we manage parolees, work with other agencies (DEA, USM, BICE) to track down guys and act as 'native guides' during warrant sweeps/entries. people tell me things they wouldn't tell local PD or their mother's, and we're in and out of the bad guys houses all the time noting associates and such.

Probation vs. Parole is weird in NY (no surprise). Probation is county, and typically not armed. Parole is state, armed, have limited arrest powers (we can arrest on suspicion of a felony or observation of a misdemeanor) and can conduct warrantless searches of a parolee's person or residence.

give it a couple days, leave another message if noone picks up. if it's important, they'll find you.
